M. We CUMMINGS 8a T. F. JORDAN. ADJUSTABLE LOOKING OOVBR FOR BOOKS.
(No Model.)
WI TJV' ESSES INVENTR S .dttorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL W. CUMMINGS AND THOMAS FRANK JORDAN, OF OLYPHANT,
PENNSYLVANIA. v
ADJUSTABLE LOCKING COVER FOR` BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,152, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed February 10, 1894. Serial No. 499.701. (No model.) v
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known-that We, MICHAEL W. OUMMINGS and THOMAS FRANK JORDAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Olyphant, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Penusylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Locking Covers for Books; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 2 is a'perspective view of the cover partially folded and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the cover ready for the book.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in temporary book covers, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and convenient temporary cover for books, formed Without the aid of gum, glue, mucilage, paste, stitches, or other independent fastening devices, but held in place by means of peculiarly formed lock joints. As these joints are not dependent upon the sizeof the paper from which the cover is formed, the cover is made adjustable to any book nearly corresponding with it in SlZe.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, theletter A, Fig. 1,designates the blank from which our improved cover is formed, said blank consisting of a rectangular piece of suitable paper. v
In making up the cover from this blank, we iirst mark folds on the lines 1, 1, and 2, 2, said 4 lines being respectively at substantially the same distance from the four edges of the blank, and extending entirely across said blank, the lines l, 1, being at right angles to the lines 2, 2, and inclosing between them an area, which should be substantially equal to the area of the book to be covered. These lines divide the blank into nine divisions which may be termed and designated as follows:-A central or body portion 3, side portions 4, 4, end portions 5, 5, and four square corner portions 6. We next mark a fold diagonally across each corner portion on the lines 7, thus 'dividing each of said portions into two rightangled triangles, designated by the letters a, d. We then mark a further oblique fold on the lines 8, running one from each juncture of the. lines l, 1, and 2, 2, to the respective edges of the side portions 4, 4, these last folds forming four right angled triangles substantially corresponding in area to the triangles a, a', one of said triangles b, adjoining each of the triangles a.
Theprecise order or manner of marking out the various lines for the folds is of course not essential. It may be conveniently done however, by first folding over the side portions of the blank to mark the lines l, l, then folding over the end portions to mark the lines 2, 2. If now, with the end portions so folded, the corner portions be folded over on a center diagonal line, the lines 7 and 8 will be marked, and upon straightening out 'the folds, the blank will have the appearance shown in Fig. l, and as above described. The folds being thus marked, the triangles a are folded back against the faces of the end portions 5, 5, and the triangles b are folded back against the side portions 4, 4. The cover at this stage is shown in Fig. 2. The side portions 4, 4, are neXt folded down upon the body portion 3 and upon the triangles a', so that the triangles a. lie upon and confine the triangles a. This fold also brings down the end portions 5, 5, upon the side portions, the folds on the lines 7 embracing the folds on the lines 8, and
completes the cover for application to the book. The cover so completed isI shown in Fig. 3.
To apply the cover to a book, the latter is laid upon the temporary cover and its covers are bent back toward each other and inserted into the pockets formed bythe ends 5, the triangles a, and the body 3.
It will be observed that the cover is greatly reinforced at the corners of the book by reason of the several thicknesses formed by the interfolding of the triangular portions a, a',
and h, and that it is practically of double IOO thickness around the entire book, and so held that it will not slip olf in use. It will be also apparent that, owing to the character of the joints, a cover so constructed will iit any book nearly corresponding in size thereto. The
' blank being once cut to the proper size, no
further cutting is required.
The blanks may be manufactured with the fold lines indicated or creased thereon, or they may be supplied to the user already folded to receive the book.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein described lock-joint adjustable cover for books, said cover comprising a body portion, side portions folded over thereon, the double triangular portions folded under the side portions at each end, the end portions folded over upon said body and side portions, and the triangular portions folded under the end portions and upon the side portions, the last named triangular portions, with the ends, and body portion, forming pockets to receive the permanent covers of a book, substantially as specified.
2. The herein described temporary cover for books, said cover comprising a body portion, side and end portions folded over thereon, and joints between the side and end portions, such joints consisting each of two triangular portions folded upon each other and underneath the side portion, and a third triangular portion folded under the end portion and upon the side portion, said triangular portions being an integral part of the blank from which the cover is made, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
MICHAEL W. CUMMINGS. THOMAS FRANK JORDAN.
