SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters' Patent N0. scacco, dated June 2e, 1894. Application led OctoberZl, 1.890- Serial No. 368,791. (No model.)
To afZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wichita., in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair Bottoms or Backs, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the ac- -Companying drawings and the letters of reference thereon, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure l, represents achair having its bottom and back portions provided with myimproved construction of chair bottom material. Figs. 2 and 3, are perspective views of the buttons or blocks used in the construction of a chair vbottom or back, showing dierent forms of construction. Figs. 4 and are plan views of the chair bottoms, showing different arrangement of wires for supporting the but'- tons or blocks. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective of a section of a frame bar of the bottom. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of one .bar of the bottom frame, and of a chair bottomrail, also a similar view of one bottom button, and a side View of other buttons supported by cross-wires, and Fig. 8 is a view of a button having slots instead of holes for the reception of wires.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of chairrbottomsand backs, and consists essentially in arranging a t a series of holes d passing horizontally through the frame bars and so arranged that the holes of one bar will beopposite those of the opposite bar, and all on substantially the same plane, and is further provided withv channels D at the outer terminal of said holes, and with an extending beveled portion or lip S at the upper outer part which formsa means of support to the frame when placed within the side rails B of the bottom or back of a chair as 'shown in Fig. 7. lI have illustrated the frame R as independent from the chair, but however 5 5 the chair bottom frame B may be constructed as is frame R and thereby require but the single frame.
W and W represent the cross wires of the bottom, the former passing at right angles 5o from the latter, and each arranged in their respective holes d of the frame R -and their outer/ connecting portions rest in the channels D of the frame, and should their end portions be connected by being twisted together such twistedportion is likewise laid into the said channels, thereby notobstructing the frame sides.
a represents the buttons or blocks of the bottom, and may be of any suitable form or 7o material, and plain or ornamental, and are provided with two cross holes C and C arranged at right angles to and one above the other and are arranged,l in the construction of a chair bottom or back, with the cross wires W W passing respectively through them at y.
right angles with the junction or cross of the wires centrally within them, and with a button or block at each cross or junction of the wires as shown in Fig. 4, and the distance 8o apart of the wires is such that the buttons or blocks meet their fellow buttons or blocks on four sides or parts, thus covering the wires from view and presenting a strong, iieXible and ventilated bottom or back.
sented as square, but otherwise they are constructed and supported in like manner.
In each of the slightly varied constructions or arrangement of cross wires the result is 9o In Fig. 8 I have shown the button as pro- 95 vided with slots C2, C2, in place of the holes C, C', represented in Fig. 2, for the reception of the wires W, W and when the buttons are thus slotted the wires may lirst be stretched across the frame R to form the checks asrco shown in part in Fig. 4 and the buttons seated upon the wires by placing them with the wires In Fig. 5, the buttons or blocks are reprein their slots, with a button at each junction or cross of the Wires.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. A chair bottom or back consisting of a frame, a series of. Wires supported by and crossing the frame at right angles to each other, and of a series of buttons or blocks respectively provided with passages through their body through the greatest diameters thereof at right angles to and one above the other, and supported, to form the seating surface of the bottom or reclining surface of the back, by passing the said Wires through said holes in the manner, substantially as set forth.
2. A chair bottom or back consisting of a frame provided with a series of horizontal forth.
and crossing the space Within the frame, and
of a series of buttons or blocks respectively provided With holes through their body one hole at an angle to and arranged above the other hole, and supported by means of said Wires passing through said holes in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set CHARLES SINGER. Witnesses:
