CASH-REGISTER.
3PECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,967, dated June 26, 1894. Application filed March 18, 1893. Serial No. 466,601. (No model.)
To all whom it may 007t06777 Be it known that I, RALPH P. THOMPSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Springfield,in the countyot Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of registering devices in which a normally closed cash receptacle is employed in connection with registering devices adapted to register the amounts placed in the cash receptacle, when the same is open.
The object of my invention is to provide means for closing or covering the operating devices of the register when the cash receptacle is closed. I attain this object by the constructions shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing some of the parts in a different position from that illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. lis a sectional elevation, with the drawer shown open.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the several views.
In the said drawings a or represent the outer casing of the machine which supports and incloses the operating parts. Within this casing to a, is located a cash receptacle, preferably in the form of a sliding drawer b, which is normally closed and locked by any suitable mechanism; apivoted bar 0, adapted to drop down and engage with a lug or projection c, on the drawer, being preferably employed for this purpose. The drawer is adapted to be released by an operating lever d, pivoted at d, within the casing and provided with a handle (1 projecting through the casing so as to be operated from the outside thereof. This lever (1 has a projection (1 adapted to engage with a projecting portion 0 of the pivoted looking bar a. The drawer b, is adapted to be opened by the action of a spring in a well known manner.
Arranged within the casing, preferably above the cash receptacle, is a series of levers e, each of which is adapted to actuate a tablet e, to cause the same to appear at the top of the casing a, when the key is depressed.
These levers are each provided with or formed in the nature of a key o and correspond to the operating key levers of any cash registering device; each key of the series being suitably numbered and adapted to operate any suitable or well known registering'mechanism, as indicated at n, in Fig. 4.
At the front of the casing a a and about the projecting ends of the lovers or keys 6, I
provide a movable cover f, adapted, when closed, to completely cover the keys. This cover f, is preferably formed on the arc of a circle and is pivoted at each end at f, to the casing, and is adapted to act in connection with the extended portion g, of the casing, to form a chamber in which the registering keys are inolosed when the cover is in its normal position. Means are provided by which the cover 1, is connected to the cash receptacle, so that when the cash receptacle is opened the cover will be opened and the keys exposed; the closing of the cash receptacle being adapted to close the keys. This I preferably accomplish as follows: Pivoted inside of the casing is a projecting arm or finger h, the end of which is adapted to engage a stud or projection h, at the rear of the cash drawer b. A connecting rodm, from the pivoted arm h, to the movable cover f, causes the cover to move with the arm or finger. If desired the spring for operating the drawer may be attached directly to the arm h, as shown in Fig. 2 so that when the drawer is unlocked it is forced outwardly by the pressure of the spring against said arm, at the same time opening the cover f. As the drawer is closed the arm h, contacting with the drawer, is returned to its normal position, thus closing the cover f.
By the above construction it will be seen that the registering keys are normally inclosed and no registration can take place until the drawer has been opened.
It is quite obvious that a device of so simple a character admits of many modifications in its construction, and a great many devices which will readily suggest themselves to the.
mind of a mechanic may be employed for carrying out the invention. I do not, therefore, limit myself to thespeoific arrangement of parts as described, but
I claim, broadly, as my invention- 1. In a cash registering device, a cash re ceptacle and a series of registering keys, means for locking and unlocking said receptacle, and a movable cover adapted to normally inclose said keys, andintermediate mechanism between the cash receptacle and cover, adapted to open said cover when the cash receptacle is opened, substantially as specified.
2. In a cash register a series of registering keys and a cash receptacle, means for looking and unlocking said receptacle, a cover for inclosing said keys, and means, substantially as described, for operating said cover by the of a sliding drawer arranged therein, and a series of registering keys, a pivoted cover adapted to normally inclose said keys when the drawer is closed, and a connection from said drawer to said pivoted cover, whereby the opening of said drawer causes a similar movement of said cover, substantially as specified.
5. In a cash registering device, an outer casing, a normally closed cash receptacle arranged therein, a series of registering levers above said receptacle, a spring actuated arm adapted to contact with said receptacle, a pivoted cover adapted to inclose said keys, and a connection from said arm to said cover, substantially as specified.
6. The combination with the drawer Z), the coverf, for the keys 6, and the intermediate connection from said cover to said drawer, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, A. D. 1893.
RALPH P. THOMPSON.
