UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD A. PERCY, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
COVER FOR TOBACCO-PlPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,864, dated June 26, 1894. Application filed March 5 1894. Serial No, 502,426. (No model.) Patented in England January 1 2, 1893, N0. 715- To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be 1t known that I, ARCHIB'ALD ALLAN PERCY, a subject of the Queen of Great Brit-v ain, and a resident of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Tobacco- Pipes, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Great Britain,No. 715, dated January 12, 1893,) of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates to covers for tobacco pipes and it has for its object to provide them w th adjustable grips or holders so that they can be fitted to pipes having different sizes The grips are retained in the adusted position by means of one or more springs.
The invention is illustrated under several modifications on the accompanying sheet of drawings.
In the arrangement shown in section by F1gure 1, in plan by Fig. 2 and in elevation by Fig. 3, the cover consists of adisk or plate a which has two slots 17 converging from the circumference toward the center cut in it in a straight line. Through these slots there pro ect downward two holders or grips c which may be arranged to hold upon either the intenor or exterior of the bowl. Each of the said grips is connected to or made one with a push d which works in a curvilinear or other shaped tube or channel 6 attached to or formed on the upper or under surface of the disk or plate a. The pushesd are hollow and are made to receive the ends of the spiral spring f. The pushes slide telescopically in the channels or tubes e. d are extensions which are formed on the pushes d and serve as guides. The cover is fitted to the pipe bowl by merely compressing the pushes (1 so that the grips a can enter the interior of the pipe bowl. The spring fholds the grips in the adjusted position in the bowl and prevents the cover falling off.
In sectionalview at Fig. 4, plan view at Fig. 5 and side elevation at Fig. 6 a cover is shown having pushes formed of bent bars g. The bent parts of the bars, as shown, fit concentrically within the spring f andthe downwardly projecting bent ends form the grips or holders 0.
In sectional view at Fig. 7, plan view (with cover plate e removed) at Fig. 8 and in side' elevation at Fig. 9, a cover is shown having holders 0 which fit on the exterior of thepipe bowl. In this case the pushing bars g may be formed of flat strips with a cut out part or slot in the center (see Fig. 8). The bars are made to overlap each other so that when, say, the left hand bar is pushed inward the right hand grip c is moved outward, and vice versa. The spring f is fitted in the center of the slot- .ted bars and is held in position by prongs h made on said bars.
In sectional view at Fig. 10, plan view at also fitted on' the under side of the cover.
The pushor handle part 9' of each bar 9 projects up through the slots b and is bent to the horizontal, so as to lie on the top of the cover.
In side elevation at Fig. 13 and in plan with the cover plate 2' removed, at Fig. 14 a ventilating cover is shown. In this case the pushes d which slide in the guide slots 12, are
connected to the free ends of bent wire or steel strip springs f. The outer ends of the springs are secured rigidly to the cover plate a, at t", 'i'.
j are the ventilating holes of the cover.
' In plan view at Fig. 15, end elevation at Fig. 16 and side elevation at Fig. 17 a cover is shown having two bars or levers k, k, which are fulcrumed at or about their centers on a cross bar Z secured to the cover. The upper ends of the lovers which pass up through a cross slot cut in the cover are flattened out so as to form convenient handles. The levers, which work like a pair of scissors, and have the grips cat their lower ends, are retained in the adjusted position by means of the spiral spring f which is coiled round the bar Z. The ends of the spring, asshown, bear against the upper ends of the lovers. Ventilating tops may be fitted on any of the covers.
It is to be understood thatI do not confine myself to forms of adjustable cover shown, as the invention can, manifestly, be further modified in the details of construction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cover for tobacco pipes having adj net- 5 able grips or holders, said grips or holders being retained in the adjusted position by one or more springs detachably connected to said grips or holders, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a cover having slots, adjustable grips fitted and sliding in slots made in said cover, and one or more springs for holding said grips in position, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination a cover plate at having slots b, adjustable grips a sliding in said slots, and a spring f for retaining said grips in the adjusted position, substantially as hereinbe fore set forth.
