SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,848, dated June 26, 1894. Application filed September 8. 1893- Serial No. 485,0i52. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY MONTFORD OLEOK- LEY, a resident of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of. Georgia, have invent-. ed certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Cases; and I do hereby declare the following, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in knock-down cases.

Much inconvenience and loss have been felt by travelers, especially ladies, owing to the lack of closets, wardrobes and clothes baskets having no looks, at hotels 'or other places where the travelers are temporarily stopping. Such lack of proper accommodations often necessitates the retention of fine dresses, &c., in tightly packed trunks, resulting, in many instances, in rendering them unfit for use. And again, the traveler often wants for a placeor receptacle for soiled clothing, not wishing to place them in their trunks with clean, fresh clothes or to place them in bags where they will be liable to be stolen by dishonest servants.

It is the object of my inventionto obviate these inconveniences and annoyances and to produce a case which can be folded into compact form and placed in a trunk and which can be readily, quickly and securely set up when desired for use, for the reception of clothes, which may be loosely placed therein.

A further object is to produce a knockdown case which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, occupy very little room when folded, and which shall be effectual in every respect, in the performance of its functions.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim. 7

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view of the case set up ready for use.

My improved case is preferably made of tar-board or similar. material a covered with leather, canvas or paper b on the exterior and preferably lined with some light material I) such as muslin, linen, &c.

The top D of the case is hinged to the upper edge of one of the sides 0 by means of the covering b and liningb, and said top is preferably made in three parts, 0, c, and 0 the parts a, 0 being hinged together in the same manner as above described, and the part 0 being hinged to the edge of the part c',said part c constituting a flap for the top and adapted tolie parallel with the front side of the'case, to which it can be fastened by means of a lock (1.

At the corners of the case, corner brackets 01' stays e are located, said brackets or stays being secured to the bottom A and strips 19 by means of suitable fastening devices, the

portions e of said stays which extend over a the corners at the ends of the case, constituting abutments to limit the movement of the ends B when the case is being set up, said stays also acting as braces for the end pieces. To the ends of the sides 0, hinged hasps E are secured, the member fof said hasps being provided with perforated lugs f adapted to pass through slots f made in the end pieces B. On the inner side of the end pieces, adjacent to the slots f hooks g are located and adapted to engage the perforated lugs f. Clasps 'i are secured to the portion 0 of the top D and provided with lugs adapted to pass through slots in the end pieces of the case, to which they are secured by means of hooks on the interior of the end pieces, in the same manner as above explained. Secured to the ends of the part c of the top D, are hasps j, provided with perforations j for the reception of loopsj secured to the exterior of the end pieces B. Hooks j are connected to the,haspsj and are adapted to engagethe loops 3' l-Iasps 1a are secured to the flap c and provided with perforations k for the reception of loops secured to the front side of the case. Hooks 7c are connected to the hasps It and are adapted to engage the loops 70*.

The case thus set up is ready for use, and

is a strong, substantial case, adaptable for the reception of clothing, which may be placed loosely therein,-after which the case can be securely locked.

The device can be quickly set up or folded up, in which latter condition it is very coinpact in form and will occupy very little room in a trunk.

My improvements are very simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and effectual in the performance of their functions.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a knockdown case, the combination with the bottom, sides and ends hinged thereto, hasps made in two leaves hinged together located at the corners of the case, and fastening devices inside for engaging said hasps from the inside of the case whereby to lock the adjacent edges of the ends and sides together, of a cover hinged to one of the sides, said cover made in two or more sections hinged together, one section having hasps, devices inside of the case for fastening these hasps and another section having hasps which fasten on the outside of the case whereby one section is unfastened from the outside and the other from the inside, substantially as set forth.
