UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. ALGEO, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO W. IRVING STEEL, OF SAME PLACE.
sAsH-bFA'srsNeR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,691, dated J' une 19, 1894. Application tiled November 20, 1893. Serial No. y491.416. (No modell) Be it known that LCHARLES C. ALGEO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat and effective device for locking `together theupper and lower sashes of a window, and this object I attain inthe manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1,is'a perspective view of parts of the upper and lower sashes of a window, and
of the frame in which they are guided, illustrating my improved sash lock. Fig. 2, isa transverse4 section of parts of the sashes and the locking device applied thereto; and Eig. 3, is a similar view showing the parts in different relation to each other.
A representspart of the frame of the upper sash and B part of the frame of the lower sash, and D represents part of the framework in which the sashes are guided in the usual way. Let into the face of the side rail of the upper sash is a plate Fl for the locking bolt G, said plate having an inclined bolt guide a, with transverse pin b adapted to a slot d in the b olt and vserving to limit the forward movement of the latter, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate F has, above the inclined bolt guide, a recess ffor the reception of an inclined tongue g projecting upwardly from the forward end of the bolt G.
The top of the lower sash Bis provided with a catch plate h which, when the sashes y are fully closed, as shown in Eig. 2, is overlapped by the projecting'end of the bolt Gso as to eectually prevent either the raising of vthe lower sash or the lowering of the upper v sash until the bolt G has first been pushed backward and its florwardend is free from engagement with the plate.
When the upper sash is being raised or the lower sash is being lowered, the outer edge of the meeting rail of said lower sash acts rst upon the inclined finger g of the locking bolt and then upon the inclined or beveled forward end of the bolt itself, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to force back said bolt, the latter moving forward into locking position as soon as the sashes are close together and the catch plate h has passed below the bottom of the bolt.
The forward end of the bolt G is beveled on the underside as shown at c' so as to provide a fiat or horizontal bearing portion for engagement with the catch plate h and thereby overcome any tendency which vertical pressure might otherwise have to cause the bolt to slide upward and inward and thus release the sashes.
Insteadof relying wholly upon gravity to i ei'ect the projection of the locking bolt this action may be reinforced by a spring interposed behind the bolt as shown for instance by dotted lines in Fig. 2, or in some cases the bolt G may be arranged horizontally and the spring may be wholly relied upon to effect the projection of the same.
If it is'desired to lock the sashes when the same are partly opened or to lock them in different positions the upper sash may have disposed throughout the length of the side rail of the sash a series of locking bolt G.
Having thus described my invention, I
plates F each with claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent--u CHARLES C. ALGEO.
