0. W. GOTTRELL, LANTERN 0B. LAMP EXTINGUISHER.
No. 521,642. Patented June 19, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WARNER COTTRELL, OF WASHQUGAL, WASHINGTON.
LANTERN OR LAMP EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,642, dated June 19, 18941,
' A ppllcationflledll'ovember24, 1893. Serial 110.491.5379. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known-that I, CHARLES WARNER Cor- TRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washougal, Clarke county, State of Washington, have invented an Improvement in Lantern or Lamp Extinguishers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of extinguishers which are provided with an air pipe extending adjacent to the wick tube and provided with a compressible bulb for forcing air through the tube.
The object of the invention is to provide such an extinguisher which shall be simple in its construction and which'may be readily attached to lamps and lanterns as at present constructed.
The invention will first be described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention,-the figure shows a lantern having my extinguisher attached.
I have herein shown the application of the extinguisher to a lantern, of which A is the base, B the frame, 0 the slotted wick tube, and D the perforated ventilator. A small pipe E is passed from without up through one of the holes of the ventilator, and its inner end which is curved as shown and is open, lies in proximity to the wick tube and to the wick therein. Upon the outer end of the pipe E is an air bulb F. To the pipe E is secured, as by soldering, a small staple G, the arms of which also pass up through separate holes in the ventilator D, and being bent over may be further secured by a drop of solder, thereby firmly securing the pipe in place. To extinguish the flame, the bulb F is pressed, whereby a jet of air is directed from pipe E along the edge of the wick and extinguishes the flame.
In the application of the device to a lamp, the pipe E is similarly secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An extinguisher attachment for lamps and lanterns consisting in an air tube of a diameter to pass through one of the apertures in the foraminated ventilator disk, bent laterally at its upper 'end, and provided at its outer end with an air bulb, and an attaching device secured to the tube between said bulb and bend and formed of an upwardly projecting bifurcated arm or staple, the ends of which are adapted to be passed through said ventilator and bent laterally in opposite direotions, substantially as herein described.
2. In combination with the wick tube and perforated ventilator of a lantern or lamp, a
pipe passing from Without through one of the holes of the ventilator and having its inner end open and in proximity to the wick tube CHARLES WARNER COTTRELL.
