GATE- LATCH SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,045, dated June 5, 1894. Application filed June 2'7, 1393- Serial No. 478,960. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GABRIEL ROHRBAOH, of Del Rio, in the county of Val Verde and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to latch attachments for swinging gates constructed to move their lock latch vertically as they are swung, and it has for its object to provide certain simple, durable and easily applied attachments which may be secured to a swinging gate of the kind stated and such invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will hereinafter be first described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a swinging gate, the gate being shown in side elevation with a portion of one stile in section. Fig. 2 is a face view of a portion of the keeper post and the catch member, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the catch on line 44 Fig. 2.
In the practical application my improved latch devices are preferably employed in connection with that class of gates known as swinging and tilting gates, and in Fig. 1 I have shown them applied to a gate of this kind, in which 14 indicates the keeper post, the gate, which is connected with the hinge post and with swing operating devices 29 and 30 of any well known construction, and 43 indicates one of the side catches with which the latch engages when the gate is swung to an open position, which catches in practice may also be of any ordinary construction.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1, it will be noticed, that the gate stile 12 has a a slotted portion as at 12 and in such slotted portion operates the latch 35, which is pivoted in a keeper 34 on the back side of the stile. This latch 35 is adapted to automatically engage a catch on the post 14 and such catch consists of a plate 36 fastened rigidly to the post 14, formed with outwardly extending flanges 37 and 38, arranged in pairs, one above the other, the flanges 37 converging upward and the flanges 38 converging downward, while slots 39 are left between the upper and lower flanges, so that the latch may pass between the said upper and lower flanges when the gate is closed. Detents 40 are pivoted on the plate 36 so as to hang Opposite the slots 39, and these swing inward being prevented from swinging outward by the flanges 37 and 38, the detents therefore will permit the latch 38 to pass to one side and swing through either slot 39, see Fig. 3, but they will prevent the latch from swinging back through either slot. Below the slots 39 is a U -shaped keeper 42, in which the latch rests when the gate is closed, while above the slots is a pin 41 which prevents the detents 40 from swinging too far backward. It will be observed, that the flanges and 38 converge horizontally so that the flanges act as guides to insure the entry of the latch 35 through the slots 39. The gate, when open is held open by the catches 43, and such catches 43 are provided with slots 44, which are adapted to receive the latch and are inclined at their outer edges, as shown at 45 so that the latch may readily enter the slots.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be readily understood that as the front end of the gate is lifted, the latch 35 is raised above the. top flanges 38, which permits the gate to swing open, and engage one of the catches on the side posts. When the gate is opened to move to a closed position and the latch released from the side post catch, it swings inward and as it closes its latch 35 engages the inclined faces of the catch on the keeper post, passes through one of the slots 39, and the adjacent detent 40 and drops into the keeper 42, thus securely locking the gate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination in a swinging gate, with the lock or keeper post, and a gate constructed to swing and having its latch end tilted vertically as it is swung, and a. latch pivoted on the latch post of the gate, of a catch member on the keeper post, consisting of oppositely arranged pairs of converging flanges separated by slots and swinging detents at such slots, adapted to move away to admit the latch inward through the slots, but hold it from passing outward therethrough, all arranged. substantially as shown, whereby the latch will be lifted out over the upper flange inside the entrance slots, and a keeper dismembers of the catch when the gate is tilted posed between the lower flanges all arranged and swung, and whereby the latch enters the substantially as shown, whereby the latch will slots as the gate closes, as set forth. be held from passing back through the slots x5 5 2.
