. O. A. JOERISSEN. TYPE CLEANING DEVICE FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES- No. 520,850. Patented June 5, 1894.
ATTOH N EY 7 WITNESSESZ 6 I Z EVEN [URI] nnnnnnnnnnnnn c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC CARL A. J OERISSEN, OF ILION, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS F. JOERISSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-CLEANING DEVICE FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,850, dated June 5, 1894.
Application filed October 23,1893. Serial No. 489,065. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. J OERISSEN, a
citizen of the United States, residing atIlion,
in the county of I-Ierkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Type-Cleaning and Ribbon-Winding Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined type-cleaning and ribbon-winding device, and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide an interchangeble cleaning device and an interchangeable ribbonspool for type-Writing machines; second, to provide a ring or band, for holding the type, of a type-writing machine, to be used in connection with the type-cleaning device; and my invention consists of the construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of the device carrying the type-cleaning brush. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the device but showing the ribbon-winding spool instead of the type-cleaning device. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the ring or band for holding the type; and Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the ring or band applied to the type bars.
Similarlettersrefertosimilar parts throughout the several views.
a, is a rod or bar provided at its upper end with a handle a, and at its lower end with a sleeve a about midway of the bar at a is pivoted a cog wheel b provided, on its face, with the handle or crank 12'. The rod or bar a, between the pivot a and sleeve a is provided with an off-set a for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
at is a spindle, which is loosely mounted in the sleeve a and which is provided, near its upper end, with a gear wheel 0 which is located or housed in the off-set, above referred to, and which meshes with the cog wheel I). The extreme upper end of the spindle is pivoted in a socket c, on the off-set. About midway of the spindle d is a shoulder e against which is clamped the cleaning device f or the ribbon spool g, by means of a nut e on the lower end of the spindle. The lower end of the spindle is screw threaded and is provided with a nut e, the purposes of which are not only to clamp the cleaning device or ribbonspool but also to allow of the easy removal of the same from the spindle in order to substitute one for the other.
In connection with my type-cleaning device I use an open ended spring band or ring 7c,-.
4) represent two type bars, of a type-writing machine, carrying type to which is applied the band or ring 70. This band or ring holds all the type, comprised in a type-writing machine, so that they may be all cleaned simultaneously.
The operation of my type-cleaning device is as follows to wit: The band being properly adjusted to fit the type basket, of the typewriting machine, is lowered into the same, by means of the handle at, until it grasps the type at the back. The handle a of the cleaning device is then grasped by one hand, and the cleaning-device also lowered into the basket of the type-writing machine, the handle or crank b of the cog wheel I) is then grasped by the other hand and the cog wheel turned, either to the right or left, thereby turning or rotating the cleaning device, either to the right or left, by means of the cog wheel meshing with the gear wheel a on the spindle d.
I am aware that an egg-beating device has been provided with a band or belt having a cleaning surface, the band or belt encircling the egg beater, to be used in cleaning type of type writing machines, but such a construction I do not claim.
I am also aware that a corrugated wire for holding some of the type bars of a type writing machine, in order that the same may be cleaned is not new and this I do not claim, but I am not aware of any device other than my own for holding all the type in order that they may be cleaned simultaneously.
WhatI do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A type cleaning and ribbon winding device, consisting of a rod or frame having a handle at one end, a sleeve at the other end, and a double bend near the middle forming an offset above the sleeve, a gear wheel 12 pivoted to the rod at its bend and provided with a handle or crank arm, a spindle journaled in the sleeve on the rod, abeveled gear on th e spindle meshing with the gear wheel 12, a removable device on the end of the spind1e,a collar against which said device bears and a nut to clamp the removable device against the collar, all substantially as described.
