Description
otrs hefrenr E. E. HOPKlNS, UF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. sl?. (laten Jennery 16, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thetLE. E. HOPKINS, of Phila.- delphin, `Pennsylvanie, have invented'ztn Improved 'Writer-Cooler; and I do hereby declare the following,r to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesuine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists ot" a water-cooler cornposed ot' an inner end an outer casing, e reservoir, and upipe, arranged, as described hereinafter, so that the inner .casing can be filled with Water without admitting air to the same.
1n order to enable others skilled in the art to ineke and use my invention, will now proceed to describe its construction and opera- LlUll.
0n reference to the accompanying drawings, which forni e part of this specification, Figure l isn sectional elevation oi' my improved water-cooler, and Fig. 2 n plein view with the top removed.
A is n cylindrical cese,to the top of which is fitted .i lidha, and at one side of which, near the top, is n smell reservoir, B. Vithin the y,case A is it square vessel, G, which is provided with e top, D, and with suitable legs e e, and
from the side ot' this vessel, near the bottom of the saine, projects :i tube, f, which extends through the outer casing, A. A short tube,, projects into the cese A from the bottom of the reservoir B, and from the side of the vessel '(1, zt short distance below'the tube i, projects e smaller tube,fi,and to each tube is connected one end ot' a tube, K, of rubber or other `suitable material.
lt is well known that with water-coolers as usually constructed there is n, great Weste of ice on account ot' the shape ot' the interior of the cooler, the latter being round and necessitatin g;4 the cutting away of the corners of theV ice, or of breaking the letter in to small pieces.
ln the ordinary coolers, nlso, the meltingof the ice is hastened bythe `frequent removal ot' the cover of the cooler and admitting Warm sir to the interior when the cooler has to be replenished with Water.- l
By melting the interior of myvcooler of such shape and size that e'block ot' ice may be deposited in the saine withoutcutting uwityeny portion ot' it, the waste from the letter cause is prevented, while et the seine time it is not necessary to' use e cooler of snylsrger external size then those of theord'inery form usu- 'ally employed for the same amount of ice.
When the ice and Water lherve been 'placed in the cooler both the vessel D and the cnsingA are covered with their respective lids, and the cool Water, when required, is drawn from the. cooler through the pipe f.
When the supply, of weiter has to be replenished it is introduced into the reservoir B,- trom which it hows through the pipe K into the vessel C. 4
It will be seen that the pipe k is of such a.
form that e portion'of the water rnnust remain- Yin the lower bent portion ot' the'same, es inordinery traps, this water efectuelly closing the pipe end forming e. trap, by which all commu nicetion between the external air and that in the vessel D is closed, and the waste of ice and heating of the water which would ensue from the removal of the lids are eectually pre- Vented.
The space between the two cesings may, it' desirable, be lled with any suitable non-conducting material.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `A water-cooler composed of an outer casing, A, ain inner casing, c, n reservoinB, and a, pipe, K, the latter being combined with the casing and forming en inverted siphon,es and for the purpose described.
p In testimony whereof I have signed my neme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
C. B. Biron, JOHN WHITE.
