MORTON G. BUNNELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK C. AUSTIN, OF
SAM-E PLACE.
RO/AD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 520,479, dated May 29, 1894.
' Application filed September 16 1893. Serial No. 48 5,642. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORTON G. BUNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Road-Scrapers, of which the following-is a specification.
In my application for Letters Patent of the United States filed January 31, 1893, Serial No. 460,368, I have described and claimed a scraper having a continuous flexible spring scraper-blade comprising a series of blade sections formed by spring metal plates rigidly held along their upper portions, and as illustrative of a blade thus characterized, I have in said application shown that the spring blade may be made continuous by lapping the sections, and also that the blade can be made practically continuous by providing non-lapping sections and arranging along the same, a continuous flexible strip, the result in both instances being that while the blade can yield and bow in conformity with the crowning shape of the street or road or otherwise conform to such contour as the road or street surface may have, no gaps or openings will occur along the blade and hence trails of scraped up soil-will not be left behind. In my said application I have also elected to select the blade having lapping sections, as the subject matter of a special claim, and hence in this application I have made special claim to the sectional blade provided with a continuous flexible strip, in which Way While I secure the advantages of a blade composed of a series of spring plates, I also efiectively scrape and clean the street or road and provide a scraper particularly effective for cleaning hard road beds.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a road scraper provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 shows taken horizontally through several of the blade sections. Fig. 4 shows in elevation the side of the blade opposite to that represented in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through Fig. 4 on a larger scale.
The mold board A is shown provided along its lower portion with a flexible strip B of rubber or similar material. This strip forms a continuous flexible backing for the blade sections C which can be attached either to the mold-board or to the flexible or yielding backing as illustrated. While therefore the blade sections are shown attached to the yielding strip, it will be obvious that they can be arranged so that their fastening bolts will pass through both the strip and the mold board, or that the blade sections could be socured directly to one side of the mold board and the flexible or elastic strip be secured to the opposite sides of the same.
The strip B can be arranged along either the front or rear sides of the blade sections, and may be either flexible, or flexible and elastic, it being seen that when arranged along the front sides of the blade, the feature of elasticity While preferable, is not so highly desirable as where it is arranged along the rear side of the blade sections. But as a preferred arrangement, I provide an elastic strip and also arrange the same so as to back the blade sections. By arranging the strip so that its lower edge shall lie near the lower edges of the blade sections, no material gaps will occur during use.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A scraper blade comprising a series of blade sections and a flexible strip arranged alongthe same, substantially as described.
2. A scraper blade comprising a series of blade sections and a flexible and elastic strip arranged along the same, substantially as described.
3. A scraper blade comprising an elastic strip and a series of blade sections secured to the same, substantially as described.
' MORTON G. BUN NELL.
