SCRAPER ATTACHMENT FOR BROOMS.

Be it known that I, VVILmAM ROBERTS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more particularly to that class of brooms employed in sweeping thoroughfares and pertains more specifically to a scraper attachment therefor.

The object of my invention is to provide a scraper attachment for street sweeping brooms in which the scraper plate may be renewed or replaced when the same has become worn or damaged.

Another object of my invention is to provide a scraper attachment for street sweeper brooms which is simple in construction and which will not materially increase the weight of the broom to which it is attached.

A further object of my invention is to provide a detachable scraper attachment for street sweeper brooms in which the scraper securing base is formed of a relatively light material, while the scraper blade is formed of a relatively tough material such as steel.

Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part thereof, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a street sweeper broom having my scraper attachment secured thereto.

Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the broom. showing my scraper attachment secured thereto, portions being broken away to more fully disclose the construction.

Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the broom and scraper attachment, taken on the line 3-43 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form of attachment.

My improved scraper attachment preferably consists of an angular three sided base plate 5, preferably formed of aluminum or other relatively light material so as not to increase the weight of the broom to which it is attached.

Bar 6 on both of the edges of its angles is provided with a plurality of aper tured lugs or ears 9, by means of which the bar may be securely fastened to the brush block. The end plates 7 are also provided with apertures for the reception of screws so as to rigidly secure the same to the brush block.

Bar 6 of plate 5 is provided adjacent the apex of the angle with an upwardly extending inclined lip 10 having a blade seat 11 formed at the base thereof for the reception of a light steel scraper blade 12, the scraper blade 12 being secured to the lip 10 by means of screws 13.

Secured to the outer face of end plates 7 are light steel wear plates 14 which serve to protect the end plates 7 from wear when the broom is used in sweeping gutters of thoroughfares.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a. modified form in which the bar 6 of base plate 5 is provided at the apex of the angle with an upwardly extending longitudinally slotted lip 15 in which the scraper blade 12 may be mounted, fastening screws 16 hold ing the same securely in position.

By mounting the scraper blade 12 in a slot formed in the blade securing lip, all danger of blade breakage is obviated. Furthermore the blade will be securely held in position, especially when the blade is used as a hoe.

It will be at once apparent that by employing a base plate 5 formed of a metal relatively light in weight, and a tough light steel scraper blade that the weight of the brush will not be greatly increased, which is an important factor in cleaning streets. Furthermore, as the scraper blades become worn the same may be readily and quickly replaced with new ones at small expense.

What I claim is:

1. A scraper attachment for broom heads, comprising an angular base plate adapted to be secured to one of the upper side edges of a. broom head, end plates formed integral with said base plate one at each end thereof, a scraper blade holding means formed on said base plate, and a scraper blade detachaloly mounted on said holding means.

2. A scraper blade attachment for brooms, comprising a base plate, end plates formed integral therewith, a projecting flange formed on said plate for holding "a scraper blade, and a scraper blade detachably secured thereto.

3. A scraper attachment for brooms, comprising an angular base plate having end plates formed integral therewith, means for attaching said base plate to a broom head, a scraper blade seating flange formed on said base plate at the apex of the angle, a "scraper blade detachably mounted on said seating flange, and protective wearing plates secured to the outer faces of the end plates.
