J. J. ALLEN.
PICTURE FRAME. No. 520,385. Patented May 22,1894.
WITNESSES: @www UNITED STATES PATENT EEICEo JOHN J. ALLEN-or DENVER, ooLoRADo'.
PICTU RE-FRANI E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,385, dated May22, 1894.
Application filed August 21,1893t Renewed April 6, 1894- Seral No. 506,639. (No model.)
. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, ref,
erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked hereon, which form a part of this specifica- My invention relates to improvements in p1cture frames, and the object -is to provide a in etallic frame of such construction that the plctures placed therein may be surrounded by settings of mineral ore specimens, the frame being so made that the pictures are inserted from the back of the frame, the front of the frame being fashioned to receive a glass plate which serves as a covering and protection for the pictures and the ore settings carried by the frame.
The improvement consists further of the features hereinafter described and claimed all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanyingdrawings in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings,'.Figure 1 is a front view of the frame. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line y-y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line ww, Fig. l. i
Similar referencecharacters indicating corresponding parts or elements of the mechanism in the several views, let the numeral `5` designate a metal plate provided with a central aperture 6 and other apertures 7 vsurrounding the central aperture. The outer rim or border 5a of the frame slopes downward, as shown at 5h to the apertures 7. The metal parts 5C around these openings are provided with ways 5d formed on the reverse side of the metal plate, said ways being adapted to receive and retain the pictures whose edges they engage. From the plane of the apertures 7 the metal plate slopes downward as shown at 5g to the central aperture 6, ways 5d being formed around the opening and on the reverse side ot' the plate to receive the central picture. Thepart 5g of the frame is provided with mineral specimens surrounding the apertures 6 and forming a border for the picture.
The parts of the plate 5 between the pictures are provided with small depressions 5k forming recesses for the settings composed of mineral ore. Around the extreme outer edge of the plate 5 are formed ways 5 for the reception of the glass plate 8J The back of theframe is provided with a covering Qsurrounding the central aperture 6 and located slightly above the plane of said aperture. The inner edge of the plate 9 is suitably fastened to the outer surface of part 5g of the frame, while its outer edge is secured to a rim 10 made fast to the outer edge ofthe plate 5 directly beneath the ways 5m. It will be observed that the ways 5d on the sides of the apertures from which the pictures are inserted, must not be formed until after the pictures are in place, when the lips forming the ways are turned over and downv upon the edges thereof. This is also the case with the ways 5m in which the glass 8 is inserted. f
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, a
picture frame composed of ametal plate havv ing a central aperture and other surrounding apertures lying in a different plane, said ap- JOI-1N J. ALLENa Witnesses:
