MAXIMILIAN M. SUPPES, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAW-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,090, dated May 22, 1894. Application filed July 12, 1893. Serial No. 480,220. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN M. SUPPES, of J ohnstown, county of Oambria, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bars, of which the full and exact description, due reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
The object of my invention is to provide a drawbar which shall serve as a means of coupling two cars or an engine and car together and also shall be adapted to assist automatically in unloading the car. It is specially adapted for use in rolling mills where the heated bloom is carried from the furnace on a car and from this car run upon the feed rollers of the mill.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a car suitable for carrying the bloom 2.

My draw bar has the two members 4 and 5, one connected to the car and the other to the motor as shown. On 4 is formed the bearing 6 through which the straight shank of 5 slides.
7 are rollers forming the top of bearing 6. The two members 5 and 6 are held at their extended position by the coupling pin 8. To this pin by the link 9 is secured the dog or trip 10 which is pivoted to 5 by the pin 11. The top arm of this trip carries the tumbler 12 which swings on the pin 13. This tumbler 12 is so arranged that it will tilt but one way as hereinafter described.

The method of operating the device is as follows: Thebloom various members of the invention in the relative position shown in the drawing the motor pushes it along the track until the desired point of unloading is reached, the tumbler 12 then engages the stationary rod 14 and the further forward movement of the motor causes the trip 10 to be thrown back and the pin 8 to be withdrawn. The car 1 then stops and the motor, continuing to force the member 5 forward, the pusher 15 engages the end of the bloom and pushes it ofi the car until it is being on the car and the caught by the feed rollers of the mill train. The motor then draws 5 back, the tumbler 12 swings and so passes beneath 14 and the pin 8 falls into place, thusagain locking the bar at its extended length.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A draw bar for railway vehicles com posed of two members, one adapted to slide upon the other for the purpose of moving the load carried by one of the vehicles and means for locking them in position and automatically releasing them.
2. A draw bar for railway vehicles having one member with a bearing adapted to receive another member, the last mentioned member being adapted to slide on this bearing, for the purpose of moving the load carried by one of the vehicles, means for locking the two members together and a device whereby the last mentioned member is released and allowed to slide upon the first mentioned member.
3. A draw bar for railway vehicles comprised of the member i having the bearing 6, the member 5 adapted to slide in said bearing and move the load carried by one of the vehicles and an automatic locking and releasing device as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. In combination with two railway vehicles a draw bar connecting said vehicles, said draw bar having a member adapted to engage and move the load carried by one of the vehicles.
5. In combination with a bloom carrying car for rolling mills an independent motive vehicle and connection between said vehicle and said car having two members adapted to slide, vehicle is enabled to discharge a bloom from the car.
6. In combination with a bloom carrying car for rolling mills, an independent motive vehicle and a draw bar between said vehicle and said car said draw bar having two members, one attached to the. bloom car and the other attached to the motive vehicle and adapted to slide upon the first mentioned member in such manner that the motive ve, hicle is adapted to automatically discharge a bloom from said car as desired.
