Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FILLMORE DAVIS, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR ONE HALF TO JONATHAN I-I. TOXVNSEND, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,905, dated May 15,1894.
Application filed J'ulySl, 1893. $erial No. 482,010- (No model.)
,To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN FILLMORE DAVIS, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon,.in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Fasteners and Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to sash fasteners and holders or means for securing an upper and lower window sash in closed position and holding or supporting either or both at any desired point or position when partly or wholly open, and the invention consists in certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a window frame and sashes provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 a vertical section through the frame and sashes; Fig. 3 a detail perspective of the fastener for the upper sash; Fig. 4 a like view of the fastener for the lower sash, and Fig. 5 a detail view of same.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon A indicates a windowframe, B the upper sash and C the lower sash of a window of the usual construction. On one side of the frame and usually upon the bead which secures the lower sash in place in the frame, is secured a toothed rack D with which the fasteners of both the upper andthe lower sash engage. At the lower end of the rack is a projection ahaving a square or right angled lower side I) with which a lever E on the lower sash C engages to lock the sash in its closed position, and on the upperside of said projection a is a seat 0 for the lever E to rest upon to hold or support the sash in a slightly open position. The lever E is provided with a projection 01 on itsinnerside which engages the teeth and the projection a. on the rack D, and with an extension e having an eye fin it to engage a rod or pintle g, and fits between the lugs or parts h It of the base plate '5 to form a hinge-joint to enable the lever to swing laterally into and out of engagement with the rack D. The lever is automatically thrown into engagement with the rack bya spring is which surrounds the pintle g and rests upon the inner end of the lever and upon the inner side of the bar Z of the plate i. The 1ever F on the upper sash also engages the rack D and is provided with extensions or lugs 'm at having eyes n n which engage a pin or pintle 0 supported in lugs or parts p of the base-plate q and constitute a hinge for the lever to swing laterally into and out of engagement with the rack D. This lever is also automatically thrown into engagement with the. rack D by a spring 7* which rests against the inner end of the lever and against the inner surface of the base-plate q.
To facilitate the attachment of the base plate q to the rail of the upper sash one end of the plate is slotted longitudinally as at s and the opposite end is slotted transversely as at t whereby the screws by which the baseplate is secured to the sash may be driven nearly home before the plate is applied and thereby avoidthenecessityof using two hands I in applying the base-plate.
The construction shown uses only one rack for both sashes a and places the levers E and Fin such relative position to each other that So both sashes may be operated simultaneously.
Having thus fully described my'invention, what I claim is- In a sash fastener and holder, the combination of a rack, a lever engaging said rack, a base-plate to which said lever is hinged to swing laterally and having slots at right angles to each other in the ends of the baseplate, and a spring in the hinge to automatically engage the lever with the rack. go
In testimony whereof Iafiix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FILLMORE DAVIS.
