W. SIDEBOTHAM. HOOP BOOT AND PAD.
No. 519,822. Patented May 15,1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SIDEBOTHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOOF BOOT AND PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,822, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed August 19, 1893- Renewed April 19, 1894- Serial No.508.230. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SIDEBOTHAM, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Boots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same..
My invention relates to horse boots, and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
The object of my invention is to provide a horse boot which may be quickly putin place or removed, which shall contain and retain securely in placeasponge whereby the bottom of the hoof may be moistened or otherwise treated, and which shall be cheap and durable.
In brief, my invention consists of a bottom metallic shoe made of flanged sections each having a continuous top surface, adjustably secured together and adapted to support a sponge and provided with a flexible jacket for attaching the device to the hoof.
1n the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of my device ready to receive the horses foot but without the sponge. Fig. 2 isa front View of the hoof with the boot in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the metallic sole with the jacket removed and Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the same.
In the drawings, S represents a metallic sole made in two sections, A and B, each of which is curved to correspond with the curve of the hoof, and which are pivotally connected at c by a rivet, or in any other suitable manner. Each section consists of three parts made integral, a wide bottom plate at, a vertical side plate y and a narrower curved top 2, and their adjustment in relation to each other is secured by means of the curved slotted metal strap D and set screw E. 'Outside of the metallic sole is a flexible jacket J made of any suitable material but preferably of rubber or leather and secured to the sole by rivets, as r, and adapted to be secured to the hoof by means of straps and buckles F and F.
In using my device, the sections A and B are first placed in proper relation to suit the size of the hoof by means of the slotted strap D and nut E. A sponge is then saturated with waterorother desired materialand placed over the bottom plates 00 and between the sections A and B. The boot is then strapped to the horses foot. The sponge is crushed downward by the pressure of the foot but as such pressure cannot be extended beyond the plane of the top plates 2 the moisture cannot be squeezed out.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is-- A horse boot consisting of an outside flexible jacket provided with suitable means for securing the same to the foot, and of an inside metallic sole made in two sections pivoted together and provided with means for radial adjustment, each section consisting of a broad bottom plate, a vertical plate, and a narrow curved top plate having a continuous top surface to support the hoof, the whole adapted to inclose a sponge under the pad of the hoof and to subject it to a limited pressure, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. RAEMOND BAIRD, JAMES T. BROWN.
