IMPROVED BALMORAL BOOT.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,9441, dated January 9, 1866.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE HAYWARD, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in High-Top Balmoral Boots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part ot' this specih'cation, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a high-top balmoral boot, made according to my invention, the outside being fully shown; and Fig. 2 represents a similar view, with inside fully shown.

In the drawings, A B C represent the upper of the foot to the boot, together with one-halt' of the leg. In this instance it is the outside of the leg, as seen at B. The parts marked A, B, and C, are in one piece, and consequently require no seam or seams across the foot. There are but two seams, the one from 2 to el being a lap-seam, while the other is a closed seam.

As the details of cutting the upper are fully set fort in my application (A) for a patent for` an improved mode of cutting the uppers of' high-top balmoral boots, a detailed description is not here deemed necessary. It may be remarked, however, that a proper pattern is placed upon the piece ot' upper leather, which is first laid upon a suitable table or bench, and the piece of leather which forms the parts marked A, B, and C is out therefrom, and a cut or slit is also made from l to 3, thereby severing the side or part C from the parts marked A and B to such an extent that the part C can be turned down to form one side of the upper to the foot, as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be seen that the edge fot' C, from 1 to 2, is laced with the edge g of A, while the edge a of C, from 2 to 4, is stitched with the lower edge, b, of the piece D, and is also closed with the back lower edge, m, of A. The part marked D, which forms the inside ot' the leg, is cut separately, and its front edge, c, is laced with the edgecot' B, and its lower edge, b, laps under and is stitched to the edge af, while the back edge, h, is closed with the edge d of B.

The bootis lasted and provided with heel C, sole F, ornamental rip-guard E, and trimmings in the usual manner.

The common mode ot' making high-top balmoral boots is to cut the sides ot' ihe legs and the rear parts of the upper for the foot separateiy,and which are called quarters. Then the front part ot' the upper is cut in another piece. A boot thus made has a lap-seam across the foot, which is very objectionable. In the rst place itis injurious to the foot unless a much larger boot is worn than is necessary to tit the other parts ot' the foot. Again, a seam across the foot soon gives out, owing to the constant working of the leather, caused by bending the foot in walking, and when once the stitches have given way the seam cannot be repaired so as to look well.

The boot can be made much cheaper than by the old method, while a very large per cent. ot' stock is saved, in addition to which the boor, when made according to my invention, will last much longer and is much less liable to give out.

In making the boots I prefer to have the piece marked D come upon the inside ot' the boot, in which case the outside of' a pair ot' high top balmoral boots would appear as shown in Fig. 1, while the inside would appear as shown in Fig. 2.

Having described my improvement, what I claim as of' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture, is-

A high-top balmoral boot the upper and leg of which are cut and made substantially as shown and described.
