MEAT-CHOPPING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,000, dated May 1, 1894.

To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. KULL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Chopping Machines, of which the following is a speclfication.
My invention relates to improvements in meat-chopping machines, and more particularly to that class in which vertically reciproeating knives or teeth are used, and is especially designed to simplify and cheapenthis class of machines and to produce one which shall be easily operated and constructed.
To this end myinvention consists in an upper and lower series of cutting knives, the former mounted in a vertically reciprocating holder, and the latter in a rotating table suitably mounted and constructed for operation. Upon the accompanying drawings,illustrat- 1ng my invention, similar figures and letters of reference denote like parts throughout the several views.

In the accompanying drawings 1 is a base, and 2 a main support for the rotating table A. Said table is provided with beveled teeth 3 upon its under side which mesh with a beveled driving pinion 4 upon a short shaft 5, one end of said shaft being journaled in the before-mentioned base, and the other in a suitable bracket 6. I also mount upon said shaft a suitable bifurcated arm 7 having a handle upon its outer extremity, and also provide it with a pawl 8 adapted to engage a ratchet wheel 9 which is keyed to shaft 5. This arm 7 is connected by means of a link 10 with a lever 11, one end of which is hinged to the base of the machine. The other end is designed to be engaged by a vertical rod 12 which is properly secured to the upper reciprocating holder B. Upon the under side junction with the holder B, and their connections, as will later be more fully explained.
14 is a standard in which is mounted a vertically disposed rod 15, the lower end serving to receive and support the holder B, and the upper end carrying a suitable operating handle 16. Around said rod and above the standard I place a spiral spring 17 for the purpose of returning the holder and rod at all times to a raised position. justing washer upon said rod for this spring. In order to readily get at both the upper and lower cutting knives 18 I make the upper holder detachable by means of a thumbscrew 19 which appears in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be readily seen by the drawings that the construction of the machine is such that both the rotating table and the holder B can be easily removed for cleaning or repairs.
A description of the operation of the machine would be practically as follows: After placing the meat to be chopped in the machine, the operator would simply force the holder down against the action of a spring 17 by the manipulation of the handle 16, the connections, as seen in Fig.1, of rod 12, lever 11 and the pawl and ratchet upon shaft 5, and the table would be caused to rotate, making the operation complete. The teeth are all made separate and independent of each other and can be set and replaced independent of each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine of the class described, a base having mounted upon it a rotating table provided with cutting teeth, and upon its under side having beveled gear teeth adapted to mesh with suitable driving mechanism, and an upper reciprocating holder carrying teeth and suitably mounted above said table, and designed to operate in conjunction with the same, for the purpose described and set forth.
2, The combination in a meat-chopping machine, of a base, a table mounted upon said base and adapted to rotate, a shaft suitably journaled and carrying a beveled pinion whereby said table is driven, a pawl and ratchet upon said shaft, and means as shown whereby the same is operated, as shown and described.
