' UNITED STATES l PATENT O FIcE'.
PETER F. 'CAVALIER, OF OLYDE, OHIO.
" CHECK- HooK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,937, dated May 1, 1894.
Application filed May 13, 1893.
To aZZ whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, PETER F. CAVALIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Oheck-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to check-hooks, and has for its Object to improve devices of the class set forth, to render the same simple and effective in operation, and to so construct the same that the check-rein may be readily connected to or disconnected from the hook, but at the same time will be prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged';
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved check-hook shown applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the hook. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the spring-tongue and its parts detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the d rawngs.
Referring to the dr'awings, the numeral 1 designates a hook proper, of any preferred form but preferably of the contour shown, which is secured in position in the well-known nanner by a depending shank 2, and has in the hook-arm thereof a recess 3, that "opens outwardly from the bottom of the same and across which extend transversely a pair of rounded 'bars 4, that are closely arranged with an intervening space between the same, said bars being located near the upper closed, wall of the recess 3. A spring-tongue 5 extends downwardly between the bars 4, and the ends 6 and 7 thereof pass outward in opposite'directions over the said bars and are confined within the recess 3, the said-tongue 5 being formed by looping the spring to thereby pivoting and loose pieces are dispensed with and the rigidity of the tongue to hold it in proper position is sustained by the inherent Serial No. 474,112. (No model.)
'resiliency thereof. The device is simple and effective in its construction and operation, is noiseless in its action, and can be applied to any saddle or part of harness desired.
Especial attention is directed to the specific construction of the spring tongue 5, it being noted that this tongue including the ends or arn portions 6 and 7, is formed out of a single strip of spring metal. The spring metal is bent upon itself or looped to form the tongue 5, and by reason of this bending or looping, the lower end of the tongue 5, is left rounded, so as to easily carry the check rein in and out of the hook, and at the points where ,the opposite portions of the strip of spring metal pass over the bars 4, such portions are bent abruptly at an angle from the opposite side portions of' the tongue 5, so as to| extend beyond the bars 4, to take into the recess 3, and at the bend of the strip of spring metal around the, bars 4, a combined spring` and pivotal connection is forned whereby the spring tongue is nornally held in a vertical position and will readily fly back to such position after having been swung in either direction andthen released. p
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is- The combination with a check hook provided in the under side of its upper portion with a recess, a pair of closely adjacent bars arranged in said recess at a point intermediate of the ends thereof, and a single strip of spring metal bent or looped upon itself to form a depending tongue extcnding across the entranoe to the hook and having, a lower 95 rounded end, and at the upper end of the opposite side portions of said tongue having t its terminals abruptly bent around and over the bars 4 and disposed within the recess beyond saidbars, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed'my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER F. OAVALIER.
