To all whom it may concern,.-`

Be it known that I, JOHN HOPE, of Providence,in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and usefullmproveinentsinPantograph Rolls or Plates; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in the art of preparing small articles for the engraving process. Y

The object of the invention is-to so arrange and support a number of articles vthat they may be simultaneously acted upon bygravers when introduced in a pantograph engravingmachine. Y

Another object of the invention is to reduce the cost of engraving small articles.

The invention consists in a roll, or plate, for a pantograph engraving-machine, having a number of small articles removably secured to the surface thereof and adapted to be simultaneously acted upon by the gravers.

Figure l represents aview of a roll, for a pantograph engraving-machine, constructed after the improved process. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged cross-sectional view of portions thereof. Fig. 3 represents a face view of an article for the engraving of which this process is particularly adapted.

`In carrying my invention into practice I construct a base 5 of any suitable material,- either metal, wood, cement, or a combination of materials,-the cross-sectional shape of this base depending on the nature of the pantograph machine, varying from a flat -plate to the complete cylindrical form shown in Fig. l of the drawings. In the surface of the base 5 I form grooves 6-6 separated by bars, or ribs, 7 7, the grooves being of a width slightly greater than the Width of the articlel 8 which is to be engraved, these grooves eX- tendinglengthwise of the base.

In preparing the base for use in a pantograph engraving-machine, I first coat the Vbase with an adhesive varnish, I then place the articles to be engraved within the grooves 6-6,I now apply to the surface of the cylinder, or plate, thus formed, acoat of varnish which is adapted to resist the action of acid and placing the completed cylinder, or plate,

one or more of which act on each article in the same manner as if these articles represented portions of the cylindersurface. The bars, or ribs, 7-7 may be omitted, if desired, and the articles to be engraved may be secured to the surface of the cylinder, or plate, by clamps, cement, or varnish, these ribs being adapted particularly to gage thelocations ofthe articles on the surface of the plate, or cylinder, forming the base, as no great strain is exerted on the articles during the engraving process. After the removal of the varnish, in lines and patterns, from the articles to be engraved, the base with the articles is removed from the pantograph machine and the surface subjected to the action of acids to etch the patterns into the articles. It is obvious that by this process many articles can be prepared for the acid etching at the same time, the expense being greatly reduced below that of engraving eacharticle separately.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A roll,for a pantograph engraving-machine, consisting of a base, the articles to be engraved removably secured to the base, and

a coat of varnish applied to cover the articles.

2. A roll, for a pantograph engraving-machine, consisting of a base having recessed portions, articles to be engraved contained within said recesses and a coat of varnish applied to the surface of the same.

3. A roll, orplate, for a pantograph-engraving-machine having depressions in the surface thereof adapted to receive the articles to be engraved and to gage the proper location of the same.

' 4. A roll, or plate, fora pantograph-engraving-maching, consisting of the base 5 having the grooves 6 6, and the ribs 7-7 separating the grooves, articles to be engraved secured lOO within the grooves, and varnish applied to the surface of the whole.
