UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. LLOYD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCHOOL-SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,761, dated April 24, 1894.
Application filed September 21, 1898- Serial No. 486,104. (No model.)
guide for ruling lines upon any portion of the slate, the ruler, by preference, forming a cover for a recessed portion of the slate frame intended to contain slate pencils and an erasing sponge.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figurel, is a perspective view of a school slate constructed in accordance with my invention, with the'ruler shown in position for acting as'a guide in drawing a line upon the slate.
' Fig. 2, is a face view of the slate on a some- What smaller scale than Fig. 1, and also showing the ruler in position for use. Fig. 3, is a similar view to Fig. 2, but showing the ruler in a different position; and Fig. 4, is a transverse section of the slate and slate frame on a larger scale than either of the other figures.
A represents a slate, B B the end bars of the slate frame, and D D the side bars of the same, the bar D having formed in it recesses Ct for the reception of slate pencils, and a recess b for the reception of a sponge. In the bar D is also formed a. longitudinal slot d for the reception of a pivot pin or rivet f which carries a strip E intended to serve both as a ruler and as a cover for the pencil and sponge receiving recesses a and b, the face of the bar D being recessed for the reception of said strip E when the same is adjusted so as to cover said recesses a, and b, the depth of the recess in the face of the bar being the same as the thickness of the strip, so that the latter will be flush with the face of the bar.
The pivot pinfof the strip E has a head at both ends, the head at the lower end of the pin being adapted to a longitudinal recess formed in the under face of the bar D so that the ruler can either be swung into position across the slate or into position in line with the bar D and when adjusted to the former position can be moved to and fro so as to serve as a guide for the ruling of lines upon any portion of the upper side of the slate.
The side bar D of the slate frame is also out of my invention.
The slotting of the frame D and the use of the supplementary ruler E, however, are not absolutely essential to the proper carrying Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 2. The combination of the slate frame having a longitudinal slot in one of the side bars ofthe same, with a ruler carried by a pivot pin free to slide in said slot, said ruler being longer than the Width of the slate so that when turned across the latter its free end will rest'upon and be supported by the opposite side bar, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the slate frame having a longitudinal slot in one of the side bars, a ruler, and a pivot pin therefor adapted to said longitudinal slot but confined to the ruler and to the side bar of the frame, so that said ruler can be turned in line with the frame, or across the slate, and can be moved to and fro when in the latter position, but cannot be detached from the slate frame, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the slate frame having alongitudinal slot in one of the side bars, a ruler, and a pivot pin therefor adapted to said longitudinal slot, and having a head contained within a recess formed in the under face of the slotted side bar, so that the latter will present a flush surface, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' EDWIN L. LLOYD.
