0. E. SAJOUS.
DRAWING BOARD.
No. 429,203. Patented June 3,1890.
UNITE Y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SAJOUS, OF DEVON, ASSIGNOR TO SERENA M. BERGNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAWING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,203, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed April 14, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SAJOUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Devon, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
It is well understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention relates that drawing-boards and T-squares, as usually.
constructed and employed, are unreliable for drawing parallel lines, because the accuracy of the parallel motion of the T-squares is dependent upon the alignment of the edges of the drawing-boards and of the heads of the T-squares.
Heretofore various modifications in the construction and arrangement of the boards and of the rulers have been devised in order to make them more reliable for ruling parallel lines. -For instance, a very efficient board having an absolutely parallel motion has been provided by attaching the ruler to an endless cord stretched crosswise over grooved pulleys secured to the corners of aboard; but the expense of such type of board to a greater or less extent has been a desideratum in the employment of such boards.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide an inexpensive, durable, and efficient means for obviating the abovementioned defects and disadvantages and for insuring absolute parallelism of motion of rulers used in connection with boards of different constructions for drawing purposes.
My invention consists of a drawing-board having recessed edges and a ruler adjustably connected with a carriage or traveler provided with guide wheels or rollers engaging with or in the recessed portions of the board, as is hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan View of a drawing-board provided with recessed or grooved ends or edges, and having also a slotted ruler Serial No. 347,774. (No model.)
and mechanism adjustably connected therewith for actuating the same of the type embodying the features of my invention. Fig.
2 is a similar view, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of a board showing one of the grooved 5 5 or recessed ends or edges thereof and the guide Wheels or rollers engaging in said recesses or grooves, and showing also the slotted ruler in connection with said boards. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of said board. Fig. l is a side elevational view of a board, showing the ruler and the mechanism connected therewith and adapted v to actuate the same. Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of a drawing board and ruler embodying a modified form of my invention, and Fig. 6 is an end view thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, A is a drawingboard of the usual or any preferred construction, having a recess or groove CL formed at or near the center of the edge thereof and extending entirely around the board.
B is a ruler having longitudinal slots Z) formed therein and extending inward from 7 5 the respective extremital portions thereof, and through which slots are adjustably attached means in engagement with carriages or traw elers O, to be hereinafter fully described. Each of these carriages or travelers O is provided at or near the center thereof with a vertical set-screw c, and at the respective extremities of each traveler or carriage are journaled guide rollers or wheels 0 and 0 The carriages or travelers O are attached to 8 5 the extremital portions of the ruler B by means of the set-screws c, passing through the slots 1), and the guide rollers or wheels 0 and c are adapted to freely travel in the grooves or recess a of the board A to cause 0 the ruler B to be moved across the board to occupy a position parallel with its former position, thus insuring accuracy of work in drawing parallel lines.
It might be remarked that instead of adj usting the ruler so as to occupy a position parallel with the edges of the board it may be adjusted at any required degree of inclination therewith by means of the set-screws c, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig.1, with Ice out impairing the parallelism of motion of the ruler B.
The construction and mode of operation of the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 are identical with the construetion and mode of operation of that above described and illustrated in Figs. 1, f2, 3, and :11, with the following exceptions: that the grooves or recesses b are formed adjacent to the upper surface of the board, so that the ruler B may be removed therefrom without unscrewing the set-screws c by simplylifting it off the board, and, moreover, the travelers or carriages O are curved upward at or near their centers, so as to properlysupport the ruler 13 adjacent or contiguous to the surface of the board A.
Having thus described the nature and objeets of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a drawing-board having recessed edges or ends, a ruler, carriages or travelers connected with said ruler, and guide rollers or wheels attached to said carriages or travelers and adapted to travel in said recessed edges or ends, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of a drawing-board having grooved edges, a ruler, and carriages or travelers adjustably connected with the respective extremities of said ruler and provided with guide rollers or wheels adapted to travel in said grooved edges, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of a drawing-board having recessed edges, a ruler having longitudinal slots formed therein, and carriages provided with guide-wheels adjustably connected with said ruler by means of set-screws engaging in the slots thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
l. The combination of a drawing-board having its edges recessed adjacent to the surface thereof, a ruler, carriages or travelers adjustably connected with said ruler, and guide rollers or wheels attached to said earriages or travelers and adapted to travel in and through the recesses of said board, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination of a drawing -board provided with recessed edges or ends, travelers provided with guide-rollers journaled to the extremities thereof, a ruler, and means connected with said travelers for readily adjusting said ruler thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. SAJOUS.
