DRESS-PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,378, dated April 17, 1894. Application filed March 11, 1893. Serial No. 465,586- (No modeL To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLIVER H. STILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Greenwich, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Protector for Dresses or Trousers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to protectors for the bottoms of dresses and trousers, the objects in view being to provide acheap and efiicient protector for the above purpose, the same being so constructed as to take the wear from the material of the dress or trousers; to so construct the device as to render the same.

easily applicable and removable; and so that it is not liable to offer obstruction to the free walking of the person wearing the same by engaging with the heels of. the shoes.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a braid or other flexible base of textile material to which at intervals is attached metal wear-disks, whose lower edges project below that of the braid or base to take the wear; and furthermore, in prongs formed upon the disk for engaging the braid or textile base, and the location of the same at the sides and top of the disk, so that those portions of the disk that are opposite to the braid or textile base rest snugly against the same and offer no obstructions.

Referring to the drawings:-Figure lis an inner view of a portion of the bottom of a dress, the same being provided with a protector constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of one of the protecting disks previous to its application to the braid or textile base. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through a fastener and its strip or textile base. Fig. 4 is a vertical transvere section through the same.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In carrying out my invention I employ a series of metal disks 1, which are stamped from a sheet-metal blank of suitable gage and are preferably convexed upon the lower or outer sides of their peripheries. At diametrically opposite sides a pair of horizontal prongs 2 are formed, and a similar prong 3 is likewise formed at the upper side of the lower edge of the braid or textile base, and

are preferably applied to said braid at inter-' vals of about an inch apart. The braid it will be understood is doubled longitudinally and its edges stitched together after which the protector thus formed is sewed or otherwise secured to the inner lining of dresses or to the inner surface of trousers, the lower edge of the braid being flush or even with the bottom of the trouser-leg or the lower edge of the dress, so that the disks project slightly below said edge.

It will be seen that the prongs are so located that they will maintain those portions of the disks directly opposite the braid or base snugly in contact with said braid or base so that their upper sides do not ofier any obstruction to walking by affording means in which the heels of the walker might engage; furthermore, that the disks when employed in dresses drag on the ground and take the wear from the material, and likewise in trousers the lower edges of the disk prevents the actual contact of the lower ends of the trouser-legs with the ground.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple and cheap protector adapted to be readily applied or removed from dresses or trouser-legs when it is necessary to remodel the same or when they are to be cast aside and it is desired to reapply them to some other dress or trouser-leg.
