STAMP-STICKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,494, dated April 3, 1894.
Application filed October 21, 1893- Serial No. 488,836- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp Sticking Devices; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a stamp sticking device, comprising an external case with a closed compartment in one end for a moistening device, and the other being open to receive the stamp-holder. The stamp-holder is adapted to hold a series of detached stamps, with the front of the bottom open, to admit of the outward passage of the under stamp; and in the front end is held a roller to press said stamp firmly against the envelope as said holder is drawn to the rear. The object is to attach expeditiously stamps to envelopes. The object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the device with portions of the external case cut away. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the roller and its frame. Fig. 4 is a side view of the sponge or moistening case. Fig. 5 is a top View of the follower plate.

The metallic case A is open at its front end and has a tight compartment at its rear end effected by the partition 1; and the side opening which is closed by the cap-nut H. Into this compartment is placed a moistening device comprisingthe plate of metal G bent in circular form, with an opening between the ends, and within which is placed the sponge 2, or other absorbent material.
0 is the stamp-holder-which is shown as partially drawn out of the case--which may be constructed of any suitable material, and comprises a cavityin the rear end of suitable size to receive postage or other stamps; and in the bottom 3 of said cavity, there is an opening extending the full width in front, and extending backward in a nearly semicircular form; and in a compartment in the front is held the frame F with its roller D. The pivots of this roller occupy the lengthened slots 4. in the frame of the holder. The top of the holder is slightly beveled to enable the finger to be pressed on the top of the rollerframe.
The device is operated in this manner: Put a series of stamps into the holder with the mucilage side down, and on top of these place the plate E, moisten the sponge, and pass this part of the device over a portion of an envelope, then grasp the holder with the index finger on the roller-frame and the next on the plate over the stamps, then place said holder over the moistened spot, and draw toward the rear. The front of the stamp engages the envelope through the orifice in the holder, and as it is drawn out, the roller causes it to adhere by being pressed down against the envelope.
The objects of the case, which is designed for use in the pocket, are to protect the partially exposed stamps from detriment by the absorption of moisture, and for use in moistening the envelopes.

The combination of the case A with moistening apartment, the stamp-holder O with partial opening in the forward part of its bottom the roller D and the frame F held loosely in said holder, and thereby adapted to slide within said case, substantially as and for the purpose specified. I
