JEREMIAH M. PRESSEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR PRODUCING RESPIRATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,481, dated April 3, 1894.
Application filed November 13, 1893- Serial No. 490,850. (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH M. PRESSEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device-for Producing Respiration, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful means for producing respiration, and having for its object to greatly simplify and facilitate the way and means of resuscitating and restoring persons rescued from drowning and the like dangers, and it consists of an adhesive pad to be applied on the abdomen, pro.- vided with a suitable handle whereby an operator may pull upon said pad and expand the body, produce a vacuum in the body and create a forcible entrance of air into the lungs, and again expelling the air by pressure, and thus by continuous quick movements of the pad cause a respiratory action of the lungs and a probable restoration to life.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure represents a pad constructed for the purpose above stated.
A represents a pad, preferably of oval form, and having concavo-convex surfaces.
B is a handle attached to the convex side.
'The pad may be made of suitable material,
stance to make the pad adhesive, so that when applied to the body it will stick with sufficient tenacity to enable the abdomen to be drawn outward, when'the pad is pulled, and distend it with the tendency of creating a vacuum in the lungs and causing an inflow of air, then next pressing down upon the pad for compressing the abdomen and expelling the air. By quick repetition of such movements with the pad, an artificial respiration is produced with beneficial results.
Instead of employing a sticky substance, the leather might be soaked in Water and then when applied, by expressing the air from between it and the body, itwould adhere, and the aforesaid operations performed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is e
A means for producing artificial respiration, consisting of a pad, having an adhesive surface to be applied to the abdomen, and aconvenient handle, whereby expansive and contractive movements may be produced for drawing air into and expelling it from the lungs, substantially as described.
