I JULES LERESCHE, OF SENS, FRANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Application filed August 14,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULEs LERESCHE, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Hollowing Razor-Blades and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention was patented in France Feb- The subject-matter of the present application is a new machine for automatically hollowing the blades of razors or similar articles and for shaping, forming or concaving all pieces in general, either upon one surface alone or upon both surfaces.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 shows a perspective View of my machine, seen from the from the rear, and Fig. 3- a transverse section passing through the center of the carriages at the right.
The same reference letters refer to the same parts.
The characteristic pointof my machine consists in the use of combined sliding carriages, the inferior of which are actuated in a longitudinal direction, so as to hollow the blade or piecelengthwise and the superior of which are actuated in a transverse direction, so as to hollow the piece cross wise. These sliding carriages are disposed sothat it is possible to hollow simultaneously two blades, one at the right and one at the left.
A is the motive shaft carrying the pulley A and an endless screw A engaging the wheel B fixed on oneextremity of the transverse shaft B. At the other extremity of the shaft B a disk B is located, provided with a pin 1) serving to impart the to and fro longitudinal motion to the double connecting rod 0 which transmits that to the sliding carriages F F The motive shaft A carries an eccentric button a a at each end that engage the indents d of the rods D D. and give them ate and fro transverse motion which they transmit to the superior sliding carriages F F for hollowing the blades cross wise. The rods are guided by the pieces E E, K K are conformators or shapers fixed to the sliding carriages F F Patent No. 517,464, dated April 3, 1894.

taining the various forms, which it is desired to give to the razor blades or pieces that must be hollowed.
G G are the blade carriers or piece carriers pivoted to the conformators K K that are fixed to the sliding carriages F F. Supports g g are fixed to the blade carriers in which the blades G are placed and fastened by the piece g g by means of the screw g Two powerful springs H H keep the blade carriers'G G against the regulating-screw f while the blades G are submitted to the action of the grindstones M M during the hollowing operation.
v The grindstones M are mounted upon two pointed axles L L revolving in spindles P P fixed upon the mandrel stocksX forming one body with the machine frame. The grindstones are actuated by the pulleys Z Z to which motion is imparted independently from that of the sliding carriage.
The speed of theshafts A and B is calculated so as to allow the superior sliding carriages to perform a to and fro motion, transversely and rapidly enough to hollow the blade or piece to the desired degree while the inferiorv sliding carriages perform one run from right to left and vice versa.
Let it be well understood thatI reserve the right to replace the endless screw and its gearing wheel by any other combined gearing system, which furnishes the same result. The construction of the rod D can also be modified by piercing a long opening for receiving a large button to prevent it from deviating in which case the guide E can be dispensed with. The pivoting of the blade or piece carrier G can be done in any suitable manner and the mode of fixing the pieces G will depend upon their shape. That blade carrier G can vary as to its shape and I may modify that part of the apparatus so as to hollow the upper and lower part of the piece simultaneously. That modification will not require any change in I the principle of the operation of my machine; it will be obtained by disposing simply two grindstones below the grindstones M and in the same plane therewith. The shafts of the grindstones or cutters can also be mountedin any appropriate way without departing from the principle of my machine.
Having thus described my invention, what IOO Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. Incombination, the grinding disk, the carriage operating in a direction transversely of the shaft of the disk, the holder for the blade pivoted to the carriage and extending therefrom tangentially to the periphery of the grinding disk to reciprocate eircu mferen tially thereof, the spring means for holding the pivoted holder in contact with the grinding disk and to allow it to yield as it moves tangentially thereof and the longitudinally sliding carriage having the transverse carriage thereon and the means for operating thelatter, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the two grinding disks, the two longitudinally movable carriages, the
