To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnvr J. 001211., a citizen of the United States, residing at Los,
Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements 1n Safety-Razor- Blade-Sharpening Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for stropping razor blades, and particularly that class of blades known as wafer blades and commonly used in safety razors, and the principal object ofthe invention is to provide improvements in an oscillating blade carrier frame which alternately rocks the blades into contact with members of a-pair of revolving stropping rolls and reciprocates the blades longitudinally with respect to the rolls.
It is another object to provide means for adjusting the rocking movement of the blade carrier frame.
It is a further object to provide a blade carrier frame with means whereby theholder may be slipped into position and se-' cured to theframe 1n one operation, .and
whereby the blades will be pressed by resilient means against the rolls.
It is a still further object to provide a carrier for the blades'which has a blade securing head attached to a shank by means permitting a limitedpivot'al movement.
I attain these objects by the razor stropping machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

ed to carry the journals of the stropping rolls. Disposed in horizontal alinement with bearings 11 is bearing 13 for support' ing the cam shaft. Disposed above bearing 13 is a bearing14 for the blade carrier frame sliding block, The frame is so constructed that there is an, angle formed therein. An angle member 15 is secured to the casting in the angle of'the frame with one leg extending outwardly. A strap 16 is secured to the casting and carries a horizontal shaft'17 which engages at the other end Witha leg of angle member 15, the
shaft 17 carrying a roller 18. A stub shaft 19 is secured to the casting and carries a roller 20 disposed vertically and atright angles to roller 18. A roller 21is, mountedv on a shaft which is disposed" parallel to shaft 17 Rollers 18,.20and 21 serve as an tifriction rollers forthe sliding block mounted on the end of the carrier frame. ends of shaft 22 havesecured' tothem puls leys 24-and 25 for rotation'of the roll. Upon a shaft 26' mounted in bearings 11 is secured a roll 27 which has an abradin'g surface of the same character as roll 23. Secured to the ends of shaft 26 are pulleys 28and 29. Pulleys 241, 25, 28 and 29 are of the :same diameter and are adapted to be engaged by belts which are engaged with pulleys on a driving: shaft. A cam shaft 30 is mounted in bearings 11 and has driven pulleys 31 and 32; securedtoits ends, the pulleys being. geared to driving pulleys by means of belts. Upon "shaft '30 is mounted a cylindricalcam 33 having a'cam'groove 34. ,f The -bladecarrier framecomprises a bar 35 having offset portions f at its endsto which are secured trunnions 36-and 37 the latter being preferably integral with. the carrier frame. mounted in guide blocks 38 and 39 for 0s cillation of bar 35. Intermediate the spring arms 41 are blade carrier brackets 45; these latter are short channels with side walls which are notched as shown at 46 to receive the trunnions of blade holders- A cam roller 47'is pivotally secured to the lower side of the blade carrier frame and engages with the cam groove 34, whereby rotation member 53 to rotate the same.

Pivotally secured to the table 7 as indicated at 48 is a bell crank lever 49 having at the end of one of its arms a cam roll 50, the end of the other arm being pivotally con nected to a yoke 51 which is pivotally secured to an arm 52 provided with a threaded bore with which is engaged a reversely threaded screw 53. Screw 53 has secured to it a thumb member 54 with outstanding pins providing means for grasping the screw The upper end of screw member 53 is threaded into the arm of a yoke 55. Adjustment of screw 53 varies the length of the link formed between arms 52 and 55. Yoke 55 is pivotally se cured to a telescoping rod 56 which is comprised of a solid rod 57 secured to the yoke, and a sleeve 58 mounted over the solid rod 57. Sleeve 58 is adjustably secured to the carrier blade frame 35 by means of threads. A knurled head 59 is secured to sleeve 58 and is preferably integral therewith. A jam nut 60 is threaded upon sleeve 58 to lock the sleeve in any adjusted position. A washer 61 is disposed overshaft 57 and in engagement with knurled head 59, a cotter pin 62 securing the shaft 57 to the sleeve 58 by reason. of its abutment with the washer 61 and head 59.
The blade carrier comprises a shank 63 which has a laterally extending pin 64 fixedly secured thereto and adapted to slip within the aws 43 and 44 of the spring clip 42. Shank 63 is pivotally mounted within a sleeve 64, the latter having a slot 65 of elongated form with the major axis extending peripherally. A set screw 66 is disposed in said slot and secured to the shank 63, thereby permitting pivotal movement of the sleeve 64 with respect to the shanks 63. Secured upon shank 63 is a collar 67 having diametrically disposed trunnions 68 adapted to be disposed in slots 46 of brackets 45. Secured to sleeve 64 and preferably integral therewith is a lug 69 to which are secured blade holding jaws 70 and 71 by means of a screw 72 which passes through jaws 70 and 71 and lug 69. An adjusting screw 73 is threaded into jaw 71 and has at its upper end wings 74 and 75 and a body 76 with a shoulder which abuts jaw 70,

there is no tendency to move the carriers out of engagement with the carrier frame. The sprlng arm 41 holds the blade carrier resiliently against tilting, while the jaws are I allowed a slight rocking movement thereby compensating for inaccuracies in alinement and holding the blade flat against the strepping rolls. As the cam shaft is rotated the carrier frame is reciprocated carrying the blades longitudinally with respect to the rolls by reason of cam roll 47 engaging cam groove 34. (Jam roll 50 engages the cam slot 34 and causes a rocking of hell crank lever 49; this motion is transmitted through yoke 51, arm 52, screw 53 and yoke 55 to the arm 56 and a rocking movement is secured, the rocking movement alternately moving the blades against one roll and then the other, any inaccuracies in alinement of the rocking mechanism being taken care of by reason of the rod 57 being pivotally mounted in sleeve 58. If the rocking movement is either too great or too small, it may be adjustedby loosening jam nut 60 and screwing sleeve 58 in or out, thereby changing the length of lever arm 56.

In a razor blade sharpening machine, a main frame provided with guides, a pair of Spaced stropping rolls, a blade carrier frame extending parallel with said rolls and provided with trunnions, slide blocks rockably mounted on said trunnions, said slide blocks mounted in said guides, a cam, and separately operated means whereby the rotation of said cam will effect alternate rocking and reciprocating movement of said blade car I rier frame.
2. In a razor blade sharpenlng machlne, a
main frame having guides provided with antifriction rollers, a pair of spaced strepping rolls, a blade carrier frame extending parallel with said rolls, and provided with trunnions, slide blocks rockably mounted on said trunnions, said slide blocksmounted in said guides, blade carrying means mounted onsaid blade carrying frame, a cam, a cam roll secured to said blade carrier frame and engaged with said cam, wherebythe rotation ed to said telescoping rod and said bell crank lever, whereby the rocking movement of said lever may be adjusted.
3. In a razor blade sharpening machine, a main frame having guides provided with antifriction rollers, a pair of spaced stropping rolls, a blade carrier frame extending parallel with said rolls and provided with trunnions, slide blocks rockably mounted on said trunnions, said slide blocks mounted in said guides, blade carrying means mounted on said blade carrying frame, a cam, a cam roll secured to said blade carrier frame and engaged with said cam, whereby the rotation of said cam will longitudinally reciprocate said carrier frame, a bell crank lever, a cam roll on one arm of said lever, said cam roll engaging said cam, a telescoping rod secured to said blade carrying frame, a link connected by universal joints to said telescoping rod and said bell crank lever, whereby the rocking movement of said lever may be adjusted.

In a razor blade sharpening machine, a main frame having guides provided with antifriction rollers, a pair of spaced stropping rolls, a blade carrier frame extending parallel with said rolls and provided with trunnions, slide blocks rockably mounted on said trunnions, said slide blocks mounted in said guides, blade carrying means mounted on said blade carrying frame, a cam, a cam roll secured to said blade carrier frame and engaged with said cam, whereby the rotation 0071:: at this potent may be obtained for Me cents each, by addressing the "Commiauioner ef Patentn, I

In a razor blade sharpening machine, a main frame having guides provided with antifriction rollers, a pair of spaced s'tropping rolls, a blade carrier frame extending parallel with said rolls and provided with trunnions, slide blocks rockably mounted on said trunnions, said slide blocks mounted in said guides, blade carrying means mounted on said blade carrying frame, a cam, a cam'roll secured to said blade carrier frame and engaged with said cam, whereby the rotation of said cam will longitudinally reciprocate said carrier frame, a bell crank lever, a cam roll on one arm of said lever, said cam roll engaging said cam, said blade carrying frame being provided with a transverse tubular portion, a tube mounted therein for-longitudinal adjustment, a rod secured within said tube, and a link of adjustable length secured by universal joints to the last named rod and bell crank lever.
