My invention further consists of a gagecock, comprising a casting provided with admission and expansion chambers separated from each other bya contracted inlet or port, a valve provided with a stem having a grooved cap, a forked-lever engaging therewith and provided with means for controlling the range of movement of said valve and a weighted pivotal lever normally engaging said valve.
My invention further consists of a gagecock, comprising a casting provided with a threaded fitting with a flange or collar and aninternal bore having a contracted inlet forming a seat for the cylindrical stem of a valve provided with a front partially curved flat face merging with an annular groove and a tapering flange or seat and the stem recessed intermediate of the grooved cap or head of thevalve engaged by a forked lever which is pivotally connected with curved projecting wings of the casting and cheekpieces pivotally engaged bya curved adjustable weighted channeled or recessed lever with an integral nose, lug or projection normally contacting with thecap or head of said valve; and my invention further consists of the improvements in gage-cocks, hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and general features of my invention will be more fully understood from the followingdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which-- Figure 1, is a central longitudinal section througha gage-cock embodying features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view on the line w--w,of Fig. 1, showing the construction and arrangement of the rear portion of the valve-stem and the mode of engaging the forked lever therewith. Fig. 3, is
a similar view on the line 50-00, of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, is a central longitudinal section through a slightly modified form of gage-cock of my invention, with the gasketed stuffing-box of Fig. 1, omitted, and with an annular groove formed in the rear portion of the valve-stem for the reception of a suitable packing of water to form a seal, to prevent leakage of the valve of the cock.
Referring to the drawings A, is the casting provided with an external flange a, a tapering threaded surfaced fitting a, for insertion into the boiler head or surface, an internal admission bore or barrel forming a chamber a a contracted inlet or port a with acurved front surface a, and with a rear tapering surface a, forming a seat for the front portion of a stem-valve C, to be hereinafter more fully explained and with a steam expansion chamber (2. locatedbeyond and connected with the contracted inlet or port a a and 0, are cheek-pieces formed integral with the upper rear portion of the casting for the reception of a curved lever-arm b, provided with a nose, lug or projection b, and with a longitudinal extension 11 channeled or recessed at N, for the reception of a slotted weight b, with a tightening-screw b This lever-arm b, is connected with the cheekpieces a and (H, by means of a pin or screw b.
a is the outlet or port formed integral with the casting A, at substantially a right angle to the general plane thereof and directly connected with the expansion chamber a of the cock.
a and a), are integral curved wings provided with apertures a, for a purpose tobe presently explained.
C, is a cylindrical stem valve provided with a reduced front portionv c, with a partially curved flat face 0', merging with an annular groove 0 a tapering'fiange or shoulder 0 adapted to engage with the complemental seat a, and with a recess or reduced portion in cross-section c, a rear cylindrical portion c and a-cap or head a with an: integral flange or collar 0', a recess orgroove c and a transverse groove 0 in the cap or head 0".
d, is a forked-lever provided with integral lateral pins d and d engaging the recess or groove 0 of the valve-stem O, and havinga stop d and with a longitudinal extension 01 provided with an eye d for the reception of a cord or chain e, having. a ring 2, attached thereto. This forked lever cl, is connected with the curved wings a and a of the casting A, of the cock by means of a pin or screw (1 f, is a stuffing-box or nut engaging the internal recessed portion a, of the casting A, as shown in Fig. 1, and so as to lightly seat or engage with the surface of the stem-valve O.
f, is a gasket of metal, leather or suitable material interposed between the front end of the recessed portion 1 of the casting A, and the internal end of the stuffing-box), inorder to afiord greater security to the cock in use, against leakage.
The gage-cock illustrated in Fig. 4, is the same as that illustrated in Fig. 1, with the exceptionthat the gasketedstufiing-box f, is dispensed with and the valve stem 0, is provided with a front, straight partially flat face 0 and an annular groove o which may be packed with suitable material such as leather or the like or water allowed to accumulate therein, in order to form as it were, a waterseal to prevent accidental leakage of steam from the rear portion of the cock between the cylindrical surface 0 of the val ve-stem C, and the internal portion of the steam expansion chamber 0. of the castingA or the studing-boxf, as shown in Figs. 1 or 4.
The mode of operation of the gage-cock of my invention and such as hereinbefore described, is as follows: It will be assumed that i the cock is in either the position illustrated IOC in Fig.1 or in. Fig. 4, with the lever-arm b,
having the adjustable weight b, arranged and secured by means of the tightening screw b, to the channeled or recessed portionof the lever-arm b, at such portion thereof as to adapt the cock to withstand the boiler pressure presented to the valve 0, of the cock. In order to open the cock, the chain or cord e, attached to the forked lever d, by means of the chain or cord and carrying the ring 6', is actuated to cause the rear portion of the stem-valve O, to be moved slightly in the direction indicated by the arrows in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 4, so as to permit steam or steam and water from the boiler to pass through the chamber a of the cock'A, then in the path of the flat face portion 0', of the stem-valve around the annulargroove 0 over and between thetapering surfaced flange c and inlet a and the complemental seat d of the casting A, into the steam expansion chamber a, in the barrel of the cock, around the recessed portion 0 of the stem-valve O, and through the outlet or port a of the casting. Upon the release of the hand in engagement with the ring e, of the chain or cordve, connected with the forked-lever d, the valve will again be closed by contact of the weighted-lever 72, with the cap or head 0 of the stemvalveO, and be maintained in such position against the pressureof the steam or steam and water from the boiler until again actu ated to cause the valve by means of the lever d, and cord or chain e, to be opened in order to afford the steam or steam and water a free passage under due regulation from the boiler through the internal chamber o the con-. tracted inlet or port a into the expansion chamber a, and thence downward and outward through the outlet or port a into the air. In the filling of the boiler by simply opening the valve '0, by drawing downward the cord or chain connected with the forkedlever d, the cock can .be used as a vent in order to permit of the discharge of air from the boiler during such operation. In the event of sediment collecting around the internal walls of the chamber a and (1 the same may be readily loosened and blown off through the outlet port a of the cock A, by simply applying a tool to the groove 0 in the head or cap 0 of the stem-valve O, and rotating the same around and around, while the valve is under boiler pressure and without any fear of the valve blowing out or of steam and water escaping from the rear portion of the cock as the range ofmovement of the lever-armd, is controlled by the stop d and consequently the same limits the range of movement of the valve 0, and prevents any possible tendency of it to blow out or of the steam to escape from the rear of the cock. During the cleaning operation the lever b, will be caused to assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, as well as the forked-leverd.
Among the many advantageous features of the gage-cock hereinbefore described, may be mentioned the following:First, the valve can be kept open, if requirements demand, by simply interposing'a block between the levers b and d, as it were to prop the same, that is, slightly tilt both lever-arms at an angle to the position they respectively occupy in Figs. 1 and 4; second, the ease with which the valve of the cock may be operated that is, by means of thechain or cord 6, connected with the forked lever d, the same is especially adapted for application to the highest portion or part of boilers without serious inconvenience or unnecessary time consumed in handling the cock in order to'open and close the same; third, then it can be readily cleaned of sediment or other extraneous matter accumulating around and about the internal parts without removing the parts of the cock; and moreover, while under the normal boiler. pressure, thereby saving much time and trouble; fourth, it is absolutely free from leakage or of any tendency to blow out which as important features of this cock render the same desirable for use in connection with steam boilers; and fifth, in the filling of a boiler by reason of the simplicity and ease of movement of the parts of the cock and the entire control of the valve operating devices thereof, the same is especially designed for and adapted to serve as a ventfor the boiler to permit of the discharge of air therefrom;
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is- 1.- A gage-cock, comprising a; casting provided with an internal bore and an expansion chamber having an interposed inlet or port, a valve provided with a grooved-cap, aforkedlever engaging therewith and providedwith a stop for, controlling the range of movement of said valve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
