SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 517,313, dated March 27, 1894i.r
` Appiimion flied August 3.1893. sentirlo. 482,297. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID L. TEEXLEE, of Lexington, in the county of Davidson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsy in Chair- Braces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.y
This invention relates to certain improvements in braces and tighteners for chairs, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved brace exceedingly cheap, simple and durable in construction and composed of a minimum number of parts.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:- Figure l is a perspective view of my present invention applied to a chair. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tightener of the brace. Fig. 3, is a transverse section-through the tightening device showing the brace wires, the section being taken on the lines oc-a; Fig. 2.
In the drawings the reference letter a, in# dicates a chair provided with the vusual leg's b. Each chair leg is provided with suitable hooks or eyes o, secured thereto near the upper and lower ends thereof. The two brace wires d, extend between the legs and are at their ends confined to the lower hooks c of the opposite legs. The two brace wires d are correspondingly arranged and connected to the upper hooks c, of the legs.
e, indicates a brace wiie or connection at its ends secured to opposite sides of the seat of the chair and depending therefrom. These wires are all connected and tightened by the tightening device e.
f, indicates the movable tightening head of the tightening device provided with a screw threaded shank gextending downwardly and with transverse holes 7i., extending through the head a distance below its upper end as shown. The brace wires extend through these holes of the head, the wires being preferably strung through the holes beforethey are secured at their ends. If desired vertical grooves fi, can be formed longitudinally in the head from said holes to the upper edge of the head to receive the wires and prevent injury thereto. The head j is here shown provided with separate transverse openings h, h, arranged in diiferent vertical planes for the two sets of wires d, d', respectively, and with a separate aperture 71.', for the depending brace or support wire e. This head is located in the socket j having the approximately cylindrical interior and the threaded shank of the tightener passes down through the bot-tom of the socket and is provided with a nut k, or other screw threaded means for drawing the head downwardly within the socket, so that the wires connected thereto will be tightly stretched by being drawn down into the socket over the upper edge of theY socket which is slightly rounded for this purpose. The brace attached to the seat of the chair draws the tightener up close to the bottom of the seat and also firmly holds the legs to the seat while the-cross braces d and d', draw the legs toward each other and hold them firmly in position.
The operation of this device will be easily understood, and its simplicity appreciated.
The wire connections can be maintained exceedingly tight by simply turning the screw threaded nut or thumb screw, or the braces can be loosened if desired. The construction is exceedingly simple and inexpensive and very durable.
v The device can be used with bedsteads or other like articles by merely running the braces to the opposite corners, sides, or ends of the bed or frame.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The tightener composed of the open socket having the rounded edge, the head movable longitudinally in the socket and provided with transverse openings and vertical guide Ways extending up from said openings, means, my own I affix my signature in presence of two substantiallly as described to move sid head longitudine ly in t e socket, and t e brace wires passing through said head and up said DAVID L' TREXLER' Witnesses:
