(No-Model) UNITED :STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. MITCHELL, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BEN PATTERSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DRAFT-RIGGILNG FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,145, dated March 27, 1894:.
Application led October 6, 1893. Serial No.48'7,341. (N o model-.l
To all whom it may concern:
lSe it known that I, ALBERT E. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Passaic, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Rigging for Railway- Cars,of which the4 following is aspecication, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to dlstinguish it from other inventions.
In'the annexed drawings-Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved draft rigging applied to a car; Figs. 2a and 2b, respectively, a side view and a front view of the stop castings, and Figs. 3a, 3b, and 3c, respectively, a side view, a rear view and a top view of the block which fits in the inner end of the strap yoke.
My improvement is applied to the so-called Graham draft rigging, and has for its principal object to so construct said rigging that a strap yoke may be employed in the place of the tail bolt employed in the Graham rigging. In said rigging the tail bolt,-commonly used in said rigging, as well as in numerous other forms of draft rigging, has been the weakest part of the entire structure, and I have therefore adapted the parts of the Graham rigging to admit of the use of a strap yoke instead of thetail bolt, and to admit of quick and convenient application and repairsV of my improved form. A filling block, A, is suitably secured between the center sills of the car, and abuts against the end sill B, with its outer end. The under side of the filling block is recessed to form shoulders, a, against which the thrust of stop castings, O, may be borne, and be thence transmitted to the other parts of the car frame. Followers, F, it in longitudinal holes in the stop castings, and have their enlarged heads bearing against the ends of springs, G, which are confined between the followers and stop castings. All of said parts are substantially like the corresponding parts in the Graham draft rigging, and perform the same functions as the corresponding partsin said rigging.
The drawbar D, is of any suitable or desired construction, and has a strap yoke, E, of wellknown form, secured to its inner end in the ythimble, H', fits upon said pin.
usual manner, by means of bolts, e. The stop castings are formed with longitudinal slots, c, below their upper abutting shoulders, and with longitudinal grooves, c', in their under sides. The limbs of the strap yoke pass respectively through the slots and the grooves, and have longitudinal play in the same. A pin, H, fits and has longitudinal movement in the axial bores of the followers, and a The pin and thimble prevent lateral movement of the springs. A block, J, tits in the inner end of the strap yoke, completely filling said end, and has an outwardly projecting stud, j, which its into the axial bore of the inner follower, and is of greater length than the total compression of the springs, so as not to be displaced when the springs are compressed by inward pressure upon the drawbar and springs. The block bears against the end of the neck of the follower so as to convey thc strain of draft upon the strap yoke to the follower, and from the latter to the springs, and in such manner that the strain will be over the entire length of the inner end of the strap yoke. The block is illustrated as provided with lips fitting against the edges of the end of the strap yoke, whereby displacement of the relative positions of the block and yoke is prevented. If desired, the inner end of the strap yoke may be so shaped as to perform the office of the block. i
For the purpose of rendering the removal of the bolts which secure the strap yoke to the drawbar more convenient, and to dispense with the necessity of removing the drawbar, strap yoke, stop castings, followers, springs, pin and thimble, and bearing block, when repairs to either drawbar or strap yoke are necessary, I form the filling block and the Hoor of the car with ahole, a through which the bolts securing the strap yoke to the drawbar may be removed when the nuts upon their lower ends have been unscrewed, and. through which they may again be inserted when repairs have been made. By this construction, the securing bolts may be removed, and the drawbar and strap yoke separated without disturbing any other parts of the structure, and the drawbar may be drawn out at the end of the car, and the strap yoke may IOO be withdrawn inward, toward the body bolster, without disturbing any other parts. The abutting shoulder of the outer stop casting is formed with a notch, c2, which will admit of the withdrawal of the inner securing bolt.
I claim- 1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination ot' a drawbar, a strap yoke, and stop castings slotted for the passage of the limbs of said strap yoke, substantially as set forth.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a strap yoke, of stop castings slotted for the passage of the limbs of said yoke, substantially as set forth.
3. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of a drawbar, a strap yoke secured to the same, stopcastings slotted for the passage of the limbs of said yoke, followers in said stop castings, and a spring between the followers, substantially as set forth.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of a drawbar,a strap yoke attached to the same, a spring, a follower bearing against said spring, and a block fitting in the inner end of the strap yoke and bearing against the follower, substantially as set forth.
5. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of a drawbar, a strap yoke attached to the same, stop castings having slots and grooves for the limbs of said yoke, followers in said castings, a spring between said followers, and a block littingin the inner end of the yoke and bearing against the inner follower and provided with a stud fitting in said follower, substantially as set forth.
6. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of a drawbar, a strap yoke secured to said drawbar by bolts, stop castings having slots and grooves for the limbs of said yoke, followers in said castings having the strap yoke bearin g against the inner follower, and a spring between said followers, substantially as set forth.
7. In a draft rigging yfor railway cars, the combination of a drawbar, a strap yoke bolted to said drawbar, stop castings having slots and grooves for the limbs of the yoke, followers in said castings and having the strap yoke bearing against the inner follower, a spring between said followers, and the car frame provided with a hole registering with the fastening bolts of the drawbar and yoke, substantially as set forth.
S. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of a drawbar, a strap yoke bolted to said drawbar, stop castings having slots and grooves for thelimbs of the yoke, followers in said castings, a spring between said followers, a block in the inner end of the yoke and bearing against the inner follower, and the car frame provided with a hole registering with the fastening bolts of the drawbar and yoke, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing to be my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, A. D. 1893.
