. Nl-TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES V.1WASHBURN E, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
CUFFI-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,084., dated March 27, 1894.
Application filed October 18, 1893. Serial No. 488,472- (No model.)
51b (1% whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES V.WASHBURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrison, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grid-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in adjustable cuff fasteners, and consists of a device of the same class as that for which United States Letters Patent No. 500,640 were granted me July 4, 1893, in ad justable collar fasteners.
The device in the present application is more especially designed to operate as a cuft fastener, and has, therefore, a difierent conformation than the device in said patent to adapt it to the conditions of its new situation.
My present invention consists substantially of two opposite metallic plates parallel with each other, and joined at one end with a looped formation, and separated at their other ends. Between said plates are seated devices, somewhat similar to those in said prior patent, as means for changing the interval between said plates.
The purpose of the present invention is to clasp and hold in rigid contact the front,
lapped edges of any ordinary cuff, whether such cufi be removable, or otherwise.
I attain the purposes aforesaid by the devlces illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents, in perspective, an ordinary cuff provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is two sectional views of my present invention, showing the locked lever at the two limits of its movement. Fig. 3 is a modification of the same, showing the outer plate elongated for the purpose of ornamentation, and to afford space for placing engaging projections under such outer plate. Fig. 4. is a view of the spring seat in the inner surface of one of said plates, and a detail of the spring and lock lever employed.
the plate A about centrally there is formed an elongated slot F... A looped plate spring F, having one short limb G and one long limb H, is seated between the plates A and B by being forced, loop end foremost, between said plates, from the open ends thereof, toward their closed ends until the short limb G of said spring drops into the recess D, aforesaid, formed in the inner face of plate B. Said recess is so formed, relative to the inner closed ends of the plates A and B, that the closedend of said spring will reach the closed end of the interval between said plates about coincidently with the dropping v of the short limb of said spring into said recess-D. In this position the long limb H of the spring F will lie along the inner face of the plate A, extending from the closed end.
of said plates to about the extremity or open end of plate 'A, the central portion of said limb H of the spring F extending over the slot E in the plate A at the inner surface of said plate. In this position the spring F is somewhat compressed, and sufficiently so to hold the limb G'thereof permanently in the recess D, the extremity of G being turned slightlyoutward to insure engagement.
A look lever L is seated in the slot E .of plate A in position to force the long end of the spring F toward the inner face of the plate B. This lever is somewhat of the bellcrank formation, being pivoted at its angle by means of short laterally extending ears M- -M, which project each way under the plate A, and between it and the longer limb H of the spring F. When the long end of the lever L is thrown out at right angles with the plate A, as shown in Fig. 2, the short end N of said lever lies parallel with and along the outer face of the limb H. Slight recesses are formed in the inner face of. the part A, at the outer end of the slot D, for the recepemcee tion of the ears M of lever L. When the latter is at its outer limit, as shown aforesaid, its short end N is substantially flush with the inner face of the plate A, and the long limb H of the spring F lies smoothly along said inner face. When the parts are in this position, the fastener A is slipped over the lapping portions of the cuff until the inner surface of the looped end is against the outer edges of said cuff. The lever L is then turned parallel with the plate A, when the short end N of said lever will project across the interval between plates A and B, and crowd the longer limb H of said spring F against the interposed fabric, thereby compressing the latter between said spring and theinner face of the plate B. The lever L is of such width as to fall, in the last named position, within the slot E, and lie smoothly along the outer face of theplate A, the outer extremity of said lever being projected only sufficiently to be engaged by the finger nail. When the long end of the lever L is thus thrown into the slot E, and the short end N of said lever projects across the intervalbetween" the plates A and B, the limb H of spring F, thus pressed inwardly by said le- Ver, presses the fabric between itself and the i said spring may be adopted.
OPPOSllQPlfi'EO B with sufficient force to reference, and the ends of the cuffs are placed many desired relation to each other before placing the cuff fastener over the same.
My invention is also adapted to be used as a oud holder by attaching it in the same manner to the inner edge of the cud, andconnecting it in some suitable mode to theshirt 1 sleeve. i
i In Fig. 3 the outer plate B is shown pro- My invention is also adapted for use as a collar fastener in all of those collars in which the endsare narrower than the body of the collar.
jected beyond the inner plate A, for use as a oufi fastener or cuff holder, to afford greater room for ornamentation, and also 'to permit the insertion of engaging projections of the inner surface of said elongated nlate B at a localitythereon beyond the end bf the companion plate A, so that said projections may not interfere with the insertion of the fabric in the interval between said plates.
The advantages of my invention, used as a-cuif fastener and cuff holder ora collar fastener, are that by making the short end of the lever L of a proper length, the fabric may be clasped so tightly as to render it impossible to remove the same without opening the lever L, and also that, inasmuch as no hole is required in the fabric in any of these situations, said fabric may be doubled upon itself any desired degree, so as to cause the collar or cuff to fit a neck band or sleeve band of any size.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Thecombination of the plate Bprovided with interior recess D, the plate A suitably united at one end to.the plate B and provided with a slot E, the spring F provided with a short limb G seated in said recess D, and with the long limb H projected along the inner face of plate A, the lever L provided with short end N, adapted to be optionally thrown across the interval between said plates, or parallel with the plate A; substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the plate B, provided with the recess D in its inner face, the plate A suitably united at one end to plate B and provided with'a slot E,a loop spring Fprovided with a short limb Gseatedin recess D, and the long limb H projected from the closed end of the interval betweensaid plates outwardly across the slot E, and a lever L provided with ears M and short end N, and seated at one end of the slot E and between the plate A and spring F, and adapted to be thrown into and out of the slot E, and thereby optionally force the spring F toward the plate B; substantially as shown, and for the purpose described. i i 1 3. In a cuff fastener, the combination of the plate A, provided with slot E, the' plate B, provided on its inner face withrecess D, and suitably united at one end to plate A,with its free end projected beyond the free end of plate A, sufficiently to afford seats for fabric engaging projections on its innersurface, beyond the interval between said plates, the loop spring F, provided with a short limb G, seated in said recess D, and the longlimb I'I, projected from the closed end of the interval between said plates, outwardly across slot E, and a lever L, provided with 'ears- M, and
short end N, and seated at one end of the slot E, between plate A and spring F,and adapted to optionally throw end N,'transversely across said interval and thereby force spring F, toward plate B, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
