UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. .Y
OEAMEL c. STANLEY, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., AssIGNoE E TWo-THIRDs To WILLIAM c. BOONE, OE EOONTON, NEW JERSEY, AND DON c. WATTEES,
OE OTTAWA, CANADA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 517,074, dated March 2'?, 1894.
Application filed J'nne 28, 1893. Serial No. 479,021- (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ORAMEL C. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of New York, in the county of New 5 York and State of New York, have invent-- ed certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. 'v
My invention relates to wrenches having a ro pivoted jaw, and consists of combinations of deviceshereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
The preferred form of myinventionis shown in the drawing accompanying this specification, and forming part hereof, in which- The reference numeral 2 indicates a hollow handle, to receive the bar 3; and 4, a spring between the end of bar 3 and the closed end of zo said handle for forcing bar 3 outward. The bar 3 has a groove 5 in one side thereof into which the screw pin 6 projects, and so limits the motion of bar 3 with relation to handle 2. The bar 3 has the serrated jaw 7 integral therewith at its free end. On top of the handle 2 is the casing 8 having the cavity or socket 9 at the front thereof to receive the pivoted serrated jaw lO. The jaw 10 has a V- shaped transverse notch 1l at its inner end to seat on 3o the V-shaped tooth or fulcrum 12 projecting intosocket 9 at the bottom thereof. '.lhejaw 10 has or may have a transverse groove 13. and the casing 8, a flange 14 to enter said groove. Any suitable spring is used to press 3 5 jaw 10 outward, and the groove and Iiange prevent the jaw from coming out. But the groove and flange may be omitted, and the leaf spring 15, fastened to jaw 10, as by a pin 16, with its free end resting against the flange 4o or shoulder 17 of the casing or handle, be used to hold the jaw 10 up and to retain it in place; or both these features may be used. The iiange 17 forms a stop for the jaw 10 when the wrench is in use. The sides of the casing 8 extend rearward and have pivoted between them the dog 18 which has one or more teeth 19 for coaction with the teeth 20 on the bar 3. The pin 21 on which the dog 18 is pivoted is somewhat smaller than the hole through the 5o dog, and the back of the dog is preferably made to fit closely against the end 22 of the slot 23 in the handle 2'. The dog 18 is pressed against the bar 3 by a spring, as 24, under its handle or thumb piece 25. p
By pushing in the bar 3, the spring .Lis com- 5 5 pressed and the jaws 7, 10, made to approach each other. By pressing down on the thumbpiece 25, the teeth 19 are removed from the ratchet 20, the bar 3 is pushed outward by the spring 4 and jaws 7, 10 are caused to separate.
Many changes in details may be made Without departing from my invention.
The operation of my new wrench is that when `a pipe or other thing is gripped between the jaws, jaw 10 moves down until stopped by 65 shoulder 17, the strain is transmitted through jaw 10, tooth 12, casing 8, stop or end 22, and the teeth of dog 18 to the teeth 20 of the bar 3. There is no strain on the pin 21.
Having thus fully described my invention, 7o what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In awrench, a socket, a V-tooth projecting from the bottom thereof, a jaw having a V-notch fulcrumed on said tooth, and means preventing the displacement of said jaw, in combination, substantially as described.
2. In vawrench, the combination of acasing having a socket, a jaw having its end resting free and loose against the bottom thereof, a flange orshoulder projecting into said socket, and a spring fast to said j aw and having its free end resting against said flange thereby holding the jaw in place, substantially as described. 8 5
3. In a wrench, a socket, a V- tooth at the bottom thereof, a jaw having a V- notched end and fulcrumed on said tooth, a fiange or shoulder, and a spring fast to the jaw and having its end resting against said shoulder, in com- 9o bination, substantially as described.
4.. In a Wrench, a socket, a pivoted jaw having a transverse groove, a flange to receive said groove, and a spring pressing said jaw toward said ange, in combination, substantially as described.
5. In a Wrench, a socket, a V- tooth at the bottom thereof, a jaw having a V- notch to rest on said tooth, and a transverse groove, a flange to receive said groove, and a spring pressing roo thejaw toward the flange, in combinatiomsub- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ro stantially as described. my invention I have signed my name, in pres- 6. In a Wrench, a. socket, a. V- tooth at the ence of two Witnesses, this 24th day of June, bottom thereof, a j aw having aV- notch to rest 1893. 5 on said tooth, and a transverse groove, a. flange to receive said groove, a spring fast to said ORAMEL C STANLEY' jaw, a shoulder against which the end of the Witnesses: spring rests, in combination, substantially as DON C. WATTERS, described. R. XV. BARKLEY.
