Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PAYNE, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
HEYDRAAU Lc RAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,657, dated March 20, 1894.
Application filed October 12, 1892. Serial No. 448.677. (No model.)
To all whom it may conccrn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hydraulic Ram, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in hydraulic rams and refers particularly to the Construction of the Valve for closing the end of the ram-tube or cylinder.
The object of my invention 'is to provide a sensitive and at the same time positive Valvehead, which will close the orifice tightly with a minimum escape of water.
Further objects and advantages of my in- Vention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a ram embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the Valve hanger.
A represents a horizontal ram-tube or cylinder, to the rear end of which is connected the driving-pipe, B, and C represents a ValveboX, Secured to the front end of the ram-tube or cylinder, and provided at its front side with the valve-seat, D. Rising from the top 'of the valve-box is the vertical standard, E,
to which is pivotally connected the Valvehanger, F, carrying the valve, G. This valve hanger, is bent or angular in shape, the extremity of the shorter or horizontal arm, f, being hinged or pivoted to the standard, as described, and its vertical or longer arm, f', being provided atits terminal with a horizontal spindle to which is attached the valve. The spindle, f", at the lower end of the hanger, extends forward to form a boss, g, which is engaged by the lower end of the pressure spring, H, the latter being attached at its upper end to the upper end of the abovedescribed standard. I
I represents an adjustable stop, which is screwed into a threaded aperture in the standard, and stands in the path of the swinging hanger. By the adjustment of this stop, as will be readily understood, the amount of movement or play of the valve may be regulated as desired.
K represents the air-chamber, connected with the cylinder by the aperture, Ic, which is normally closed by the drop-valve, L, and is opened in 'the ordinary manner by the pressure of the fluid in the cylinder.
M represents the outlet or supply pipe which communicates with the air-chamber and conveys the water to the point of use.
It is not necessary to describe, herein, the operation in detail of the ram,as that will be readily understood from the foregoing.
It will be seen that the pivotal point of the valve-hanger is out of alignment with the hanger, and is in a vertical plane in rear of the valve, whereby normally, the valve will stand open, whereas it is obvious that avery slight pressure upon the inside of the valve will cause it to close. Furthernore, it will be seen that the valve is positively hung and must come fairly and truly to its seat, for the reason t-hat itis carried and guided by a stiff, unyielding arm and does not depend upon the strength of a spring to hold it in alignment with its seat, as heretofore. It will be noted that the spring is bowed, at its upper end to give it greater resiliency, the shorter arm being fixed vertically to the upper end of the standard, and the longer arm descending vertically to engage the outer end of the valve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a hydraulic ram, the combination with the valve-seat, of astandard an angular hanger having its horizontal arm pivoted to said standard and its vertical arm depending in front of the valve-seat, the horizontal arm being bifurcated with its arms disposed upon opposite sides of the standard, and a spring H, having a bowed upper end fixed to said standard and a free lower end impinging against the front side of 'the Vertical arm of the hanger, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE PAYNE.
