NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH C. SOMERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ALFRED E. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
MERRY-GO-ROUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,616, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed May 9, 1893. Serial No. 473,596. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. SOMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Merry-Go-Rounds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a merry-go-round formed with platforms which are so constituted that they may rotate in reverse directions, and at difierent rates of speed, the construction of parts being hereinafter fully set forth.
Figurel representsa plan view of a merry-goround embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a merry-go-round formed of the concentric bases B which are supported on the legs 0, the concentric platforms F, G, H, which are located above the bases B, and provided with hangers J ,in which are mounted respectively the rollers or Wheels K, which run on tracks or rails on the bases B and other parts as follows: Depending from each platform is a hanger D, whose lower end is connected with a pulley M, it being noticed that the hangers D of the different platforms are concentric and the several pulleys are also concentric but on different planes or staggered, and the hangers are of different lengths, and that the hanger of the platform H is free between the inner and the central bases B, and that of the platform G is free between the inner and outer bases B. The hanger of the platform F which is on the outside, is free above said bases, the hangers thus having freedom of motion without interfering with each other.
Passing around the pulley M are the belts or bands N, whereby motion may be imparted to said pulleys, power being communicated to said belts in any suitable manner, it being evident that the several platforms may be rotated in'reverse directions, one to the other, or in the same direction at different rates of speed, or if desired at the same rate of speed, thus providing a varying, interesting and enjoyable device, said platforms being evidently provided with seats as usual in devices of the class.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 5 5 Patent, is-
1. A merry-go-round formed of a'series of concentric platforms, 2. series of separated bases on which said platforms are adapted to rotate, hangers on said platforms, and oper- 6o ating pulleys connected with said hangers, said pulleys having their centers in the same vertical line, and some of said hangers being free between the bases, and the parts combined-substantially as described.
2. A merry-go-round consisting of a series of concentric bases, a series of concentric platforms, each of the latter having a hanger with a roller running on one of said bases, and a hanger with a pulley thereon, and means for rotating said pulleys independently of each other, the centers of said pulleys being in the same vertical line, and said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A merry-go-round consisting of a series of bases, and a series of platforms having rollers on said bases, pulleys connected with hangers on said platforms, and belts on said pulleys, the centers of said pulleys being in the same vertical line, and the said pulleys being on different planes, and the interior hangers freely passing between bases, said parts being combined substantially as described.
