Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. FERRIS, OF HARVARD, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,193, dated March 13, 1894- Application filed October 16, 1893. Serial No. 488,240. (No model.)
.To all whom it.may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY L. FERRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain'improvements applied to door hangers with a view to cheapening the same and also making, them more easy of application and more certain in their continued and successful operation.
The invention has to do especially with a certain means of lateral adjustment of the door upon the hanger and will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a lateral perspective of a single door hanger showing portions of the door and rall. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of a portion hereinafter described and Fig. 4 is another detail showing the same portion with certain parts attached thereto, said Fig. 4. showing a partial section looking downward from line 4-4. Fig. 2.
In the figures, A, represents a door and B, a rail of ordinaryconstruction upon which a grooved wheel 0, runs having a spindle, c, the opposite ends of which travel upon the lower edges of the two bars, D, D. Said bars are carried by uprights, E, E, bent upon themselves at the top to space the bars apart and support them rigidly in place. The bar D, has a downward extension cl, inclosing a slot in which one end of the spindle c, is confined to prevent the wheel from dropping out of place before the hanger is applied to a door, or afterward, when the door is lifted from the rail. The uprights E, E, are bent at their lower ends to form horizontal portions, e, e, containing slots, 6 e A separate bar F, here shown as curved downward between its ends is attached to the door and said ends are also bent into horizontal portrons f, f, flush with the top of the door.
Upon these horizontal portions and extend- 111g over the top of the door are flanged plates, G, G, I shaped in cross-section so that the upper surfaces may receive and guide the horizontal portions, e, e, of the uprights E,
E, and the lower surfaces may receive and guide the horizontal portions, f, f, of the bar F. These plates G, when attached to the bar F, furnish a guide or stop in putting the same upon a door and the uprights E, E, may be adjusted laterally upon the upper surfaces of the plates and clamped in any desired position by means of bolts, H, H, threaded to nuts upon their lower ends, one of which is shown in Fig. 2 at I, and which clamps the horizontal portion of the upright, the plate, and the horizontal portion of the bar, F, tightly together. The flanges upon the edges of the plates furnish guides to keep the horizontal portions of the uprights and bar in place and avoid any twisting of the parts one upon another.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a hanger having an upright, E, bent horizontally at the bottom, of a bar F, adapted for attachment to a door and having a corresponding horizontal bend at its upper end. flush with the top of the door, a horizontal plate resting upon said upper end and extending over the top of the door and means for clamping the two horizontal portions of the upright and bar, respectively, and the plate tightly together; substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a hanger having an upright, E, bent horizontally at the bottom, and having a slot e in said horizontal portion, of a bar adapted for attachment to a door and having a horizontal bend at the top, a plate between said horizontal portions flanged above and below to receive and guide the same and extending beyond them upon the side which the door occupies and a clamping bolt extending through the slot and adapted to clamp the two horizontal portions of the upright and bar, respectively, to the top and bottom of the plate; substantially as shown and described.
HENRY L. FERRIS.
