SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.4 515,934, dated March 6, 1894.
Application iile September 2, 1893. Serial No. 484,647. (No model-l To al?, whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN D. FATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im'- provements in Brick or Tile Cutting Tables; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of the table. Fig. 2, is a view showing a portion of one of the slide bars and illustrating the segments for operating the slide bars and the cutting olf frame. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the segments in operative position. Fig. 4, is a transverse section showing the position of the different parts, when the table is in proper position to receive the tiow of clay.
Fig. 5, is a transverse section showing the position of the different parts of the table after a section of the plastic clay has been cut from the flow, and the section formed into brick. y
` The present invention has relation to brick cutting tables, and it copsists in the different parts, and combinationof parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts lin all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the legs, which may he located and arranged as illustrated in the drawings. To the top or upper ends ot' the legs is securely attached in any convenient and well known manner the rectangular frame a, which rectangular frame is constructed of a size to correspond with the size of the table designed to be constructed. The rectangular frame d may be formed separate from the legs A and attached to said legs in any convenient and well known manner, or said frame may be formed integral with the legs.
Upon the top or upper side of the frame a is located the sliding head B, which sliding head is provided with the anges b, said flanges being for the purpose of holding the sliding head B in proper lateral adjustment.
At the front or forward end of the table proper is located the frame C, which frame receives and holds the reciprocating frame D, which reciprocating frame is provided with the cutting wire c.
To the bottom or lower end of the reciprocating frame D is attached the pivoted connecting bar d, the bottom or lower end of which is pivotally attached to the free end of the arm d', said arm being securely attached in any convenient and well known manner to the shaft d2, which shaft is properly journaled to the frame work of the table proper; the frame work or legs being omitted in Figs. 2 and 3 for the purpose of better illustrating the location and arrangement of the segments. The segment N ,is secured to the shaft H, and is so located upon said shaft with reference to the pinion i that when said segment comes into operative contact with the pinion N', the segment G will be out of Contact with the rack-bar 7L, thereby allowing the pinion N to be actuated independently of the rack-bar h. The object of so locating the segments N and G, is to provide for cutting the liow of clay without imparting lateral movement to the table during the time the flow of clay is cut. As the shaft H is further rotated, the segment G will come into operative contact with the rack-har after the segment N has passed the pinion N. When the table is brought back to its normal position, the segment G comes out of operative contact with the raclobar after which the segment N comes into contact with the pinion N.
The reciprocating frames E and E are 1ocated substantially as illustrated in the drawings and are held in proper position by means of the rollers F, which rollers are located in grooves e, said rollers being located upon the shafts f, which shafts are properly journaled to the brackets g and g or their equivalents.
The bottom 0r under sides of the reciprocating frames E and E are each provided with rack bars h, which rack bars are for the purpose of engaging with the segments G, which segments are attached in any convenient and well known manner to the shaft H. The shaft H extends a short distance past and beyond the rear end of the cutting table proper and is provided with the arm I, said arm being securely attached to the shaft H.
The operating handle J is pivotally attached to the arm I as illustrated in Fig. l.
For the purpose of providing a fulcrum for the operating handle J, so that longitudinal movement may be imparted to the shaft H, the rod or bar H is provided, which rod or bar is pivotally connected to the operating handle J, substantially as illustrated in Fig. l.
For the purpose of preventing the rod or bar from interfering with the movements of the operating handle J during the time rotary motion is communicated to the shaft H, said rod or bar extends forward through curved slot la, and is pivotally attached to the bar k or its equivalent.
It will be understood that the operating handle J is to have two distinct and separate movements, one of said movements being to rotate the shaft H for the purpose hereinafter described, and the other movement to impart longitudinal movement to said shaft.
To the sliding head B, is securely attached in any convenient and well known manner the receiving board K to one side of which is located the follower K', said follower being securely attached to the upper arms of the frames E and E'. To one side of the board K are located the cutting wires m, which wires are arranged as illustrated in Fig. l, and are held tight by means of the tension screws n. To the opposite side of the wires m from that of the board K are located the arms L, which arms are for the purpose of receiving and holding an olf bearing board, the board being placed inV a position to receive the brick, after they have been cut to the proper size by means of the wires m.
The operation of the machineproper is as follows: When it is desired to bring the devices into proper position to receive the flow of clay, the different parts which move upon the rectangular frame a are moved toward the die A', until the flange .b comes in contact with the stop b; the operating handle J being in the position illustrated in the dotted lines Fig. l. After the flow of clay has reached the stop M, the operating handle J is turned upward a short distance, which movement rotates the shaft H and causes the segment N to engage with the pinion N and communicate rotary motion to the shaft cl2, which in turn lowers the cutting frame D together with the cutting wire c by means of the connecting rod d and the arm d thereby cutting off a section of the flow having a length corresponding with the distance between the cutting wire c and the stop M, after which the operating handle .I is drawn away from the die A', until the flange a' cornes in contact with the stop a?, which movement carries the cut o section away from the flow of clay; it being understood that the rod or bar H' forms a fulcrum for the outward movement of the handle J. After the cut off section of clay has been sufficiently removed from the flow of clay the handle J is elevated thereby further rotating the shaft H, which movement brings the segments G into operative contact with the rack bars h and imparts longitudinal movements to the frames E and E', which in turn remove the cut off section from the board K by means of the follower K. As the frames E and E move longitudinally by reason of the segments G meshing with the rack bars h, the segment N will mesh with the pinion N,unti1 the segmentN has fully passed said pinion, at which time the pinion N stops rotating.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a frame a having located thereon the sliding head B, and the frame C, the reciprocating frames E and E', the shaft H provided with the segments G and N, and operating handle pivoted to the shaft H by means of the arm I, the rod or bar H', the shaft d2 provided with the pinion N', and the arm d', the connecting rod d, and the reciprocating frame D provided with the cutting wire c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
