UNITED STATESA PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE EDWIN DANFORTH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
G LOVEk-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 515,873, dated March 6, 1894.
Application filed July 10, 1893. Serial No. 439,993. (No model.)
To all wiz/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWIN DAN- FORTH, of Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Fastener, of Which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l illustrates a part of a glove with one of my fasteners. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections illustrating the loop and its fastenings on one flap and the slotted lever and its fulcrum on the other ilap. Figs is asection enlarged for clearness on a line at right angles with Fig. 3, and showing both flaps connected by the fastener.v Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate in sectional elevation and in plan a moditied form ot my fastener.
My invention is a fastener for two ilaps A A', and consists in the combination of a slotted lever and its fulcrum, the fulcrum being fast to one Hap, with a loop fast to the other flap. The lever ct is slotted so that it maybe moved endwise ou its fulcrum h, in addition to its motion as a lever; and the tulcrum b is secured to ilap A, and serves to hold levera. to iiap A. The loop d is secured to flap A.
To fasten the flaps A and A together, the lever a is moved e'ndwise on fulcrum b, by means of the finger piece a', and the end of lever a. is then engaged with loop d; when the finger piece is brought down toward ilap A', and lever a then moved endwise on its fulcrum b through loop ci, and to the position shown in Fig. 1, and shown also in Figs. 5 and 6.
In the drawings l have shown a slit in ilap A, so that lever ct may compel loop ol to enter that slit, as clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, lever a, when moved endwise through loop d securely in that slit, as will be clear. This is the best form of my fastener, but it will be clear that the slit is not necessary, when fuicrum b is secured atthe edge of flap A',y
and lever a extends, when in place to fasten flaps A A together through loop d and under Hap A.
The modification illustrated by Figs. 5 and 6, diers mainly in style from the form shown in Figs. l, 2, 3 and a; but in addition the fulcrum h and loop d are sewed to the aps A and A', in Figs. 5 and 6, instead of being Secured by metallic fastenings, as in Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4; but it is of course optional how the loop d be secured to flap A', or the fulcrum b to flap A.
I am aware of the patent to Farnham, No. 177,486 and disclaim all shown therein; for in Farnhams fastener the staple is integral with the fulerum of the slotted lever; While in my device the staple is fast to one ilap, and the fulcrum to the other flap.
What I claim as my invention is ln a fastener to connect two pieces of sheet material the combination of a staple; a slotted lever; and a fulcrum pin separate and distinct from the staple; the fulcrum pin fast to one ot the two pieces of sheet material and the staple fast to the other of the two pieces; all substantially as set forth.
GEORGE EDWIN DANFORTH.
