UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE".
- MALOOLM scOUGALE, or FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
YENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,555, dated October 10, 1893.
Application filed March 11, 1893. Serial No. 465,538. (No model.)
To all whom it mol/y concern.;
Be it known that I, MALCOLM SOOUGALE, of
Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant yand ments, wa top fiap and a bottom flap adapted to be folded one above the other, and both over the end flaps, and a band for. holding the-top and bottom liaps closed.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the iinprovement in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in an open position. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a reduced front perspective view of the improvement. V
The improved envelope is provided with the front A, from the sides of which extend the end aps B and B', either formed integrally with the front A, or fastened thereto by eyelets C C or other means. The two end aps are adapted to overlap one another, and are connected with each other by a band D, preferably made of flexible material, the band being fastened at B2 to the end flap B, near its fastening end, and then the band passes through an aperture BS formed near the free'end of the flap B', then through an aperture B4 formed near the free end of the ap B, and then the end of the band D is fastened at B5 to the overlapping ap B' near the fastening end thereof. By this arrangement, the two flaps B and B can readily expand so as to form a large pocket between the flaps and the front A, to accommodate a large number of letters, documents, or other matter.
From the upperedge of the front A extends a top flap E adapted to close over the flaps B, B', and on this flap E is adapted to fold a bottom flap E' extending from the lower edge of the front A, as shown. Thus, when the several flaps are closed, as illustrated in Fig. 1, 6o the matter arranged in the expansible pocket formed between the front A and iiaps B and B', is securely locked in place, as endwise movement is prevented by the flaps B, B', and up and down movement by the fiaps E, E'. 65
In order to hold the aps E, E in a closed position, I provide a band F, preferably made of a flexible material such as rubber, and held in a staple G secured to the upper end of the front A at the vjoint with the flap E. This 7o staple G may be in the nature of an elastic band or may be of metal, as desired.
It will be seen that the band F can be readily withdrawn from the front A and the iiaps E, E', to extend only from the staple G, as illus- 7 5 trated in Fig. 4, to permit of conveniently opening the flaps E and E' for the purpose of inserting the documents.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 8o Patent-'- 1. An envelope, comprising a front, two end flaps extending from the ends of the front, overlapping each other, and secured together by a exible band, a top flap, a bottom iiap adapted to be folded over the top flap, and a band secured to the upper part of the front for holding the top and bottom flaps closed, substantially' as described.
2. In an envelope, the combination with a 9o front and top and bottom iaps, of end flaps extending from the ends of the front and overlapping each other, and a flexible band passed 'through apertures near the free ends of the said iaps and having its ends secured to the flaps near their fastened ends, substantially as described.
3. An envelope, consisting of a front, end iaps extending from the ends of the front and overlapping one another, aexible band roo securing the end Iiaps together, a top flap, a bottom flap, and an elastic band secured to the front by a staple, substantially as set forth.
