Be it known that I, ROBERT W. JOHNSON, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improved means for securing the covers of paper boxes so as to render their contents substantially air tight, and means for releasing said covers when said contents are to be used; and' the objects of my improvement are to `combine with a box having the upper half ofone of its sides hinged to its lower half, anda hinged cover provided with flaps; strips of paper pasted thereon to cover not only the joints between the flaps ot'l the cover and the body of the box, but also l the joints between said body and the hinged half of one of its sides; and to provide under said strips of paper a cord to serrato them vertically and horizontally when the material within the box, (in the present instance aseptic absorbent cotton,) is to be used. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed and sealed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same on a smaller scale. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box with the sealing strips centrally split lengthwise thereof, the serrating oord being shown lowered to a position under said strips, the front of the hinged cover partly lifted, and the hinged upper half of the front of the box lowered, to permit access to the roll of absorbent cotton therein. Fig. A is a perspective View ot the seal serrating cord or cords.

In said drawings A A represent two of the sides of the box, A2 the lower half of the front permanently secured to the sides A A and to the bottom A4 of the box. The upper half A3 of the front is flexibly secured to the upper edge of the front A2 by means of a strip a2 of strong paper or of textile material on the in ner side thereof that constitutes a hinge between said parts, the location of said hinge being shown by the dotted lines a2 in Fig. l.

The rear edge of the box cover B is iiexibly secured on line h h to the upper edge of the back A5, by means of a strip a5 of strong paper or of textile material that constitutes a hinge between said parts. Said cover is provided with two side flaps h2 and a'front ap h3. The ends of said iiap b3 are united to the flaps b2 by means ot the paper lining and covering in the usual manner, and said flaps h2 are made to overlap the sides Aot the box, while the front flap h3 overlaps the upper edge of the hinged front A3 while the latter stands vertically. y

To seal the box substantially hermetically after it has been filled or partly filled, with a coiled bat of absorbent cotton as shown at C, and also to permit said box to .be promptly and easily unsealed without necessitating the use of a knife after it has reached the physician or surgeon for whom it is intended, a cord D is made to encircle the box close under the edge ot' the flaps of the cover, and has its ends tied together at d adjacent to one of the ends of the hinged front A3, and the ends cl2 of said cord are left of sufficient length to hang not only in front ot1 the joint occurring between the end of the front A3 and the side A2, but below the hinge o? so as to be readily grasped. A small loop of cord cl3 is also made to straddle the cord D at a point corresponding with the opposite end of the hinged front A3. After the cord D has been properly located upon t-he box with its ends cl2 and loop d3 as shown, said ends and loop are retained sealed to the angles of the box by means of strips e, of paper pasted upon them to the bb'x, said strips also tightly closing the joints between the ends ofthe front A3 and the sides A A. The front of the hinged cover B is then brought down until it rests on the upper edge of the front A3 and its flaps overlap the upper portion of said front and the sides A A, and said cover is sealed to said partsA A, and A3 by means of a strip of paper F pasted over their joint, at the same time retaining the cord D under the sealing strip midway of its long edges.

To unseal the box after it has reached the person who is to use its contents, said person first grasps the ends d2 of the cord and while retained under tension, elevates them, and thereby tears vertically the strip e and part of the strip F that covered the upper portion IOO of said ends. The same operation is repeated at the opposite corner of the box, with the loop d3, furthermore, saidloop `is made to travel along the whole length of cord F, and

thereby tears the strip F the whole length thereof midway of its long edges. f

As above stated this box is mainlyin tended to contain aseptic absorbent cotton for surgeons use, that is arranged in compact coils C, the layers of which are separated by coils of tissue paper that also help to protect it from contact with the air and from the organisms in suspension in the air after the box has been opened. To cut a length of the coiled strip of cotton, it is not needed that the roll should be removed from the box; and as it is not needed that the front of the cover B should be lifted more thany to simply release the front A3 said cover remains a constant protection to prevent dust and organisms from falling on top of the coil of cotton.

I claim- The combination of a box having its front in two parts, the upper part A3 hinged to its lower part, a cover hinged to the body of the box and having side iiaps and a front flap, a cord encircling the box and. having its ends projecting beyond the side of the box, with paper strips pasted over said cord to the flaps of the cover and to the body of the box, and paper strips covering portions of the ends of the cord and sealing the upper part A3 of the front to the sides of the box substantially as Having now fully described my invention,
