- PATRICK SYVEENEY, OB OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SIPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,803, da.ted March 6, 1894.
T all whom z't maay concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK SVVEENEY, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of. Nebraska, have invented eertain usefu1 Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby deolme that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the am: to which ii1 apPertains to make and use the same, reference being ha.d 130 the aecompanying drawings, whieh forng a, pari: of this speoifioation.
This invention has relation to a new 2u1c1 novel improvomeno in car couplings, and comprises a coupling that will automatioally roceivothe Iink, and which may be opera.ted from the side o1 tho top of the car to release said link, as will be described more fully hereinafter.
Il1 13h aeoompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a oentral sectional view wibh parts broken a.way of my improved ooupling. Fig. 2 shows the instrumentalities as arrauged at the instant the 1ink is thrown from the comp- 1ing, while Fig. 3 shows a top view of tho instrumentalities with parts removed.
A represents a draw head of any suitable size and material zmcl of the usna1 configuration, which is provided. with the interior link chamber 1, having a connecting s1ot 2, whioh enters fromm above into the chamber. This narrow s1ot 2, extonds a suit-ablo distance lengthwise and centrally within the eoupling and is adapted to contain the approximately L shaped shoe 3, as shown. 'Ihis shoo is proferably of metal, anti of a suitable width and is ada.pbed to work within this narrow slot 2. Above and adjoiningi the sich 2, I have provided -the mwhead wifih a web 4, which is adapted to give pivotal support t0 the shoe, 3, by means of ehe pin 5, which is secured to said shoe and werke within suitable openings of the web 4:. This ahne 3 is. in tho shape of tho letter L am1 is provided upon the rear with tho proj eoting shoulder 6, whioh is adapted 130 Werk bo1ow the upper portion of the coupling an. so offier a riding surface for said lever.
Cenbrally within the eoupling and extendv ing from the lower portion thoreof is an apward1y curved nosing 7, which is provided at its highesh poinn 1With an angular seating within which the 1owor portion of the shoe 3,
Serial N0. 481,582 (N0 model.)
1. 111 is below tho oxtending portion of this lever 3, that'the 1ink ridos, the shoe working within lshe seating of the nosing and. against the shoulder 6, So that: it is seeurely hold within the drawhead.
Working within the lower portion of the drawhead, which is provided with a suitable seating 8, is tho bifurcated link 1ift 9, which is provided with the two extending stems 10, whioh are adapted 150 ride be1ow the 1ink aud am arrangod to work within tho depression 8, within che boteom of the drawhead. These arms 10, oxtend from the hab 9, of the link lift, whieh is supported within the drawhead by mea.ns of the main operating baml2,passing through the drawhead and provided an tho end with any suitablo cranks or 1evers, so that said link lift ean be operated from eithor side 01 top of the am 01 even from the engine with proper obnnections.
13 represents an upwardly extonding arm providod with a snitable opening and.seeured 'to the shoe 3 by moans 0f ehe two smal1 metallic bars 14, whioh pivotally seeure the lift and shoe.
'lhe ben's 12, extend through a suitable opening within the sido of the drawhoad, and when this bar 12 is turned 130 one side 113 carries the linkt lift 9, upward, as shown in Fig. 2, a; the same ohne draws the shoe 3, out of tho way so thalt the link may either readily encer or be thrown from the draW-bar.
Positioned upon either si.e cf the 1ink lift 9, in passing through suitable openings of the top of the drawhoad and working into two suitable depressions 15, within the lower portion of the drawhead are the 1ea- f springe 16, 16, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 112 is against these springs 16, whioh are pivotally soouro'. at the upper ends againsl; a web 17, that. the .liuk in entering is foreed and so ofifers a means for preventing the violent jarring of the links as they Qnter into the eouplings.
Tho oporation of my dovice is as follows: In Fig. l, for instanee, where the instrumentalities are shown in their normal position 7 link in the upper= direction.
and aronnd this nosing, in which position the shoe 3, would promptly drop into its original position, 'and so secnrely lock within the drawhead.
- Itwill be notieed that the nosing 7, forfns part of the drawhead proper am]. is f sufficient strength to withstand any necessary strain. The 1ink also in working upward wou1d work against th e shoe, and this shoe being given ample purchase by means of the tion, what I claim as new, and desire 130 secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. In adraW-head provided with a suitable 1ink openinghavinga centralupwardly projecting nosing and a communicating sl0t entering from above, the eombination of the following inst'rumentalities, 130 wit: a pivoted hnb provided with one or more projecting arms adapted t0 rest within the bottom of the drawhead and be1ow the link and provided with an upwardly extending arm, a gravity aetuating shoe pivoted centrally within said dra,w-head and adapted t0 work against the nosing of said draw-bar, bars pivotally couneeting said shoe to thearnn of said hab, and projecting rods passin g beyond the drawhead proper, by means of which said link lifting hab is operated to actuate said gravity actaating shoe, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a drawhead providedwifih a eentral opening having an upwardly'pr0jecbing nosing and acommunica.ting s1ot extending into the Iink opening of the draw-bar from above, the connbination of the following instrumentalicies, to witz: a hub pivotally secured within said drawhead, provided with suitable extending arrns adapted 110 lie within the bottom 0f said drawhead, said hub being provided with an upwardly extending arm, 'of a shoe pivotally secured within the ce1itral slot within 1;he upper portion of said drawhead 7 and provided with a should6r adapted to work be'low the lower portion of said drawhead, bars eonnecting said shoe to the arm of said hub and two leaf springsi p0sitioned within said drawhead and in front of said pivoted. hab, and an operating bar orbars for actuating said Iink lifting hab, all substantially as and for the purpose se1; forth.
3. In a drawhead the co'rnbination of*the f01- lowing instrumentalities, v0 wit: the chambar l, communi'cating with the slot 2, the gravity actuating shoe3, pivoted within sai s1ot 2, and provided with (be projecting shou1 der 6, said shoe being adapted t0 Work within a shoulderof the nosing 7, the hub 9,provided wih extending arms 10, adapted to W0rk within a depression 8, of thelower portion of said. drawhead and having an npwardly extending arm 13, the bars 14, 14, pivotally seeuri1ig Said arm 13, to the gravity actuating shoe, flehe springe 16, positioned in freut of said hub 9, the operating bars, 12, all substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth. V
In testimony whereof I affix my signatnre in presenee of two witnesses.
