COMBINED WOOD-BOX, KINDLING AND ASH RECEPTACLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,353, dated February 27, 1894. Application filed May 11, 1892. Serial No. 432,596- (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN H.1VIOINTOSH, Sn, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Chelsea, in the county of W'ashtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wood- Box, Kindling and Ash Receptacle; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful device, comprising a combined wood-box, kindling receptacle, ash and dust-pan, serving as a whole, in the capacity of an auxiliary fire builder, and consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, as fully hereinafter set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claim.

The object of the invention is to-provide means for conveniently handling, the kindling, wood and ashes, in the building of fires, and efiecting a systematic procedure for facilitating such work. This object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved device. Referring to the letters of reference, A indicates a base made of any suitable light metal. Said base is rectangular and trilateral in form, being open at its forward end to receive the combined ash and dust-pan B,

which is adapted to slide therein. Said pan being provided with the transverse partition b, forming the ash coinpartmentC at the forward end, and the dust compartment D, atthe rear. The rear ends of the sides of the pan being rounded, as shown at a, to afford more ready access to the dust compartment,

and to add a finished appearance to the pan, which is also provided with a handle d, by means of which it is manipulated.

E indicates vertical standards, formed of a continuous rod, the lower ends of which are attached to the sides of the base A, and which extending upward, are bent horizontally, as atf, and formed into the handle portion 6, to which the handle it is secured. Attached to the horizontal portion f of said standards, and supported thereby, is an oil-tank F, provided with the induct tap m, and educt cock 11, shown in Fig. 1.

In the use of this improved device, in the building of fires, the heavy or large wood is first placed upon the base A, between the curved guards E, next the smaller wood, and last the kindling, which comes directly under the cock 4% of the oil tank or reservoir F, when by opening said cook the kindling may be thoroughly saturated with oil, which, should any portion thereof drip through the kindling and wood, is caught in the ash-pan below. If it is necessary to first take up the ashes before the fire is started, the pan B is withdrawn and the ashes deposited therein. The kindling is then placed in the stove or grate; the smaller wood next, and last the large wood, in regular order, when the fire may be lighted. The matches for which purpose, being contained in the match box 2, attached to the base A as shown in Fig. 1. The dirt, if any, madein building the fire, may be readily swept into the dust-pan D, by means of a broom carried in the broom-holder J, also attached to the base A, when the pan B isreplaced in said base, andthe ashes and dirt carried away and emptied. If more wood is desired from which to replenish the fire, it is placed upon the base A, between the guards E, in which position it may be conveniently carried, and retained until used.
