To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN T. GALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of temporary binders and has particular relation to that class of temporary binders in which pads or blocks formed of temporarily attached sheets of paper are detachably bound within a suitable cover.

The objects of myinvention are to provide an improved binder of this class of superior construction and arrangement; to so construct the same as to facilitate the connection and removal of the pads with and from the cover and to produce other improvements which will be more specifically pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face or plan view of my improved bindershowing the cover thrown open. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the central portion of the same taken on line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the pad end strips. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the pad end strip showing in full and dotted lines a modification in the manner of connecting the latter with the binder cover and Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of the rear end portion of one of the pads showing another modification in the manner of forming a connection between the pad and cover back or binder.

9 represents a horizontal wire one of which is bound to the rear end of the pad said wire being preferably held in place by means of a flat strip of flexible material 9' which is secured to the under side of each of said pads. In the wire g is formed near each end thereof a staple shaped projection 9*. Owing to the spring character of the keepers d the overlapping ends of the keepers are held against each other by spring tension. The method of connecting the pads with the keepers consists in bringing the loops or staple projections 9 of the wire 9 in contact with the inner arms of the forward portionsof the keepers d pressing the latter inward and slipping the projections 9 into the keepers between the overlapping ends thereof. In this manner it will be seen that a number of the pads may be readily and eifectively connected with the binder cover and that the spring contact of the overlapping ends of said binders will prevent any tendency of the pads becomin detached therefrom accidentally. I

By the construction and manner of operation herein described, it will be seen that any desired number of pads which may be contained within the binder or cover may be readily connected therewith and that any one of said pads or the remnants thereof maybe readily removed by bringing its staple projections g opposite the upper arms of the outer portions of the keepers and pressing said upper spring arms outward.

As indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings I may secure to the strip g the permanent arm or member of an elongated safety pin 1', the

spring arm or member of which is indicated at '6 and which may be made toiengage with or pass through keepers (1 the latter being secured to the binder back in the manner described for the keepers d and being formed of a continuous metallic strip as indicated in Figsf l and 5 of the drawings. It 'is evident that in case of the employment of the safety pin catch the pads may be separated from. the binder by releasing the arm 2' of the pin from the usual catch 11 of the latterand then drawing-the pad out laterally.
