SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,317, dated February 27, 1894.
Application filed October 5 1893- To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARWELL L. BEN- NETT and RUssELL B. ADAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Westerville, in the county of Franklin and Statezof Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stump-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the improvement of stump pullers and has particular relation to that class of stump pullers wherein alifting sci-12w is employed in conjunction with a derr1c The objects of our invention areto provide an improved stump pulling machine of this class of such improved construction and arrangement of parts as to greatly facilitate the operation of removing stumps from the earth and to produce other improvements the details of which will be pointed out hereinafter. These objects we accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective of our improved machine shown in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the derrick cap and operating nut. Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of the hitch olevis.- Fig. 4 is a central sectional view of the permanent foot of one of the derrick posts. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the lower portion of one of the derrick posts and its I ground wheel and Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of one of the post supporting shoes.

As indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the draw- 6 5 ings, the periphery of the screw collar on has formed therein at desired intervals pin holes 0 in the desired one of which is adapted to be inserted one end'of a substantially L-shaped stop pin o the latter projecting from said collar periphery at such distance as to result in its contact with the vertical arms of the clevis m, when said screw is rotated.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, we provide the unthreaded port-ion'of the screw Z at a point above the'clevis m with a transverse handle rod 19.
(1 represents the root chain which may be passed about the stump roots orengaged therewith in any desirable manner and the end links of which may, as shown in the drawings, be made to engage respectively with the projecting end portion m and the hook portion m of the clevisbar m It is evident, however, that one or both of said end links may be engaged with said clevis bar between the armsof said clevis, or that other well known means may be employed chain and bar.
With the trunnions d of the nut are connected, as indicated in the drawings, the upper separated end portions of asuitablesweep arm 0", to the lower and outer end of which may be hitched a horse in the usual manner.
The method of operation of our improved stump puller is substantially as follows: The root chain having been connected with the stump or its roots in any desirable manner and its ends connected with the clevis bar as hereinbefore described, the desired lifting movement is imparted to the screw by causing the horse hitched to the sweep to travel in a circular direction about the derrick. This movement of the sweepowi-ng to its connection with the nut 01' results in the rotation of said nut 'and in the consequent feeding upward of the screw Z which engages therewith. During this operation, itwill be seen that any tendency of said screw toward rotation is obviated by the contact of the pin 0 with the clevis arms: In case, however, it
is desired to slacken the chain g by hand, said screw 1 may be readily rotated in the desired direction by grasping the rod pand rotating the same with the hands, this being attempted only after removing the pin 0 from the head m.
It is, well known that in the class of stump pullers to which our invention relates, great strength is required of the derrick frame and the posts forming the same are necessarily of such length as to make it exceedingly desirable that they be well braced and connected. By the method of bracing hereinshown and described, which consist in the employment of the cross frame piecesh. clips h rodsi and d git will be observed that not only will a strong brace connection be afforded between said posts, but that with the exception of the bolt is the necessity of piercing the posts and thus weakening the same, is obviated.
By loosening the nuts which hold the clip bolts f in position, it is evident that the position of the ground wheels f may be varied as to height when desired, but these wheels for connecting the being so located on the posts a as to cause their lower portions to project below the ends of said posts, it is evident that said wheels will receive the burden of the weight when the posts are moved 0E the ground blocks. It will be observed that these ground blocks or shoes are of such construction as to present various bearing surfaces and therefore decrease the possibility of their sinking too far into the earth. In moving the derrick from said shoes, said posts are moved oflf the same in the direction opposite or away from the shoulders e Owing to the fact that the pins f upon which the ground wheels f are mounted, are inclined as hereinbefore described, it will be seen that said ground wheels will travel in forward and parallel directions when said derrick is moved.
The position of the stump to be pulled and arrangement of its roots, may result in the attachment of the chain thereto being made in such manneras to throw the screwl out of a vertical position. In this case, it will be seen, that the bearing block 0' will be allowed to turn in its seat allowing the nut 01' to adapt itself to the position of said screw.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stump'pulling mechanism the combination with a derrick frame,a lifting screw adjustably supported in said frame and a clevis 'm depending from said screw, and a cross bar detachably connecting said clevis arms, said cross bar having one of its ends inclined or beveled and its remaining end turned upward or provided with a shoulder and a chain adapted to be detachably conneeted with said clevis cross bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Ina stump pulling mechanism the combination with the connected derrick posts, a cap therefor, a nut, above said cap, a lifting screw passing through and engaging with said nut and means for. rotating said nut, of a collar m on the lower end of said screw and clevis m depending from said collar, a detachable cross bar in the lower end of said clevis adapted to support achain, a hand rod connected with and intersecting said screw Z, there being peripheral pin holes in said'collar m, and a pin 0' adapted to be inserted therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
