Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC S. HERSHEY, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAhlD.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR CURRYING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5, I51, dated June 12, 1847.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. HERSHEY, of
Hagerstown, Washington county, State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Composition or Stuff (called by curriers dubhing) for Putting Out Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description.
In order that the composition or stuff be properly applied, the leather should be prepared as follows: If very heavy or stout, it should be beamed or slicked on the flesh side. The composition or stuff should then be applied as rough stuff and hung up. When dry it should be moistened, and then shaved or flattened in the old or usual way with a curryingknife. The edges should be sharp and smooth. The leather must then be scoured and oiled on the green side and sammied, then stretched on a table, and the composition or stuff again applied, according to the substance of the leather, (heavy or light,) with a brush or rag and hung up. When dry it may he finished with or without the usual process of again shaving or whitenin g, instead of which slickening with a slicker or simply rubbing with a cloth or brush will answer. Very light or thin leather will not need the rough stufl".
To make and prepare the composition or stufi' v i soap, tanners oil, and stale-urine preparation, as follows: Take one pound common rosln and one-half pound gum-asphaltum. Pulverize and mix the rosin and gum -.asphaltum and put them into two gallons good tanners oil. Then take one pound common hard soap, cut fine, and put into the oil. Then place the whole as mixed over a slow fire or heat, stirring occasionally until the soap is fully melted or dissolved. Let stand a while until pretty well settled. Then pour off carefully, so that the sediment, if any, may remain in the vessel. While warm add one gallon stale urinep Stir Well, and when cool is ready for use. Should always be well stirred before using.
What I claim as my invention or discovery,
and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of rosin, gum-asphaltnm, and hard soap mixed and combined with oil and stale urine, as'above stated, and for the purpose and use above stated.
