UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
ERNEST LESLIE RANSOME, OE OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
FIREPROOF FLOORING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 5,015, dated February 20, 1 894.
Application filed March 28, 1893. Serial No. (N0 11105910 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST LEsLIE RAN- SOME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireproof Flooring, of which the following is a specification.
lhe object of my improvement is to form a flat ceiling between the concrete beams of a fireproof floor, the floor being of concrete and iron, of the construction patented by me in 1884 (No. 315,226). In building floors under this patent in order to use the materials to the best advantage the iron is placed at or near the bottom of concrete beams which form an integral part of the structure, and being monolithic with it extend downward from the general under surface of the floor after the manner of wooden floor joists. By my present invention I make these beams with outward bevels. Commencing at a line an inch or so above the bottom the beam is beveled outwardly on each side to the bottom edge. thin slab of concrete or other fireproof material. Further, in order to insure a better key between the beams and the ceiling slab, and to prevent the latter rising in its seat from any cause, in place of the simple aforementioned bevel, I form compound bevels, which consist of short alternating lengths of Upon these projections I form a outward and inward bevels. After these beveled beams have hardened s'ufiiciently moldboards are bolted, wedged or braced up to their lower edges and the fireproof ceiling is molded in between the beams and against the bevels which keep it in place. A final coat of plaster can be applied in the usual way.
The accompanying drawing represents a general view of the beams and ceiling slabs in which- A represents the concrete beams.
13' represents the bevels.
C represents the ceiling slabs.
I am aware that hollow concrete floors have been devised with a flat ceiling; but practical difficulties of construction have prevented this system from coming into general use. I do not claim such monolithic construction, but
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- A ceiling slab molded in situ: and keyed to concrete beams having alternating projections and recesses along their lower edges, substantially as described.
