To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Plates and Memoran dum-Slates; and I do declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention is a combined door plate and memorandum slate, and consists in the special construction and combination shown and claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a front view, in part, showing removable parts.

A is the frame of the plate, its front divided into two parts, 1 and 3, provided with a glass plate 1 for name, or number, in the top division, 1, and a slate in 3, in lower. The plate and slate slide into recesses formed by turning over the edges of A. The top edge,

6, and loweredge, 7, are separate from the frame A and removable as shown in Fig. 2, so

that the plate or slate may be inserted or removed. 6 and 7 are heldin place by the screws 6' and 7 8 and 9 are rollers journaled in the end of the frame A as shown in 5 Fig. 3. Over these rollers runs an endless belt 2, containing printed memoranda for use, through slot 1 behind glass plate 1", as shown in Fig. 1. Such memorandum may be used on the belt as desired, having reference to the 0 business, &o., of the party employing the device. The roller 8 is loosely journaled in boxes 12, which contain a coiled spring 10. These springs are so arranged as to push or pull the rollers as far apart as these boxes will allow, the object being to keep the belt 2 taut. The lower roller is provided with a knob 4, projecting from'the frame A, on the axle of the roller. Turning this knob turns the roller 9 and the belt 2 running over the rollers, and in this manner different printed memoranda may be brought to the slot 1' as 1893. Serial No.4=66,009- (No model.)

The inner end of the roller 9 is provided with a spring ratchet mechanism, viz: 11 is a ratchet wheel on the end of the roller. 5 is a catch operated by the coiled spring 15 against the ratchet wheel .11. 5 is a thumb piece on the outside of the frame but close against it, secured to the end of the catch, 5', projectingt-hrough the frame. Pressing upon this thumb piece 5 pushes the catch 5' out of the notch in the wheel 11 and allows the roller to be turned. When turned as far as desired releasing the thumb piece allows the catch to engage a notch in the wheel and locks the device. The thumb piece 5 is small and unnoticeable, so that a person unaoquainted with its use would not know how to unlock the device.

Heretofore the great objection to door plates of this kind has been the ease with which the Wag could alter the memoranda left by the owner.

The memoranda slate in connection with the door plate and return memoranda I claim as new.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a door-plate, the combination with the frame of the door-plate provided with grooves for receiving a removable plate and grooves for receiving a removable memorandum slate, and provided with a horizontal slot across the face of the frame behind the removable plate, and the removable slate and the removable plate 1 and removable slate 3, and screws 6' and 7 holding the removable plate and removable slate, respectively, in position in the grooves, of rollers 8 and 9 within the frame at opposite ends thereof,the endless belt 2 on said rollers and provided with memoranda adapted to be viewed through the horizontal slot across the face of the frame, and catch 5, spring 10 operating the catch, and the ratchet wheel 11 on the end of one of the rollers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a door-plate, the combination with the frame of the plate of a removable name plate and a removable memorandum slate adapted to fit into sockets in the frame, the horizontal sight opening in the frame between the name plate, and the endless belt within the frame running over the rollers 8 and 9 journaled in each end of the frame, the belt provided with memoranda adapted to be read through a sight opening in the frame as the belt is turned, the rollers 8 and 9 journaled in boxes in each end of the frame, coiled springs 10, 10, in boxes of one of the rollers holding the rollers apart, the thumb piece 4 extending from the outside of the frame into one of the rollers for revolving the same, ratchet Wheel 11 on the end of one of the rollers inside of the box, catch 5 for engaging the ratchet wheel and extending outside of the frame in the form of a thumb piece, and spring 10 holding the catch against the wheel and adapted I 5 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
