SACK-CASE FOR PACKING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,957, dated February 20, 1894.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDISON H. NORDYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack-Gases for Packing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in certain improvements in that class of devices known as sack cases for packing machines, such as are shown for instance in Letters Patent of the United States No. 486,960, issued upon the application of Evart M. Thompson, November 29, 1892. Said improvements will be first fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sack case embodying my said invention, and the immediately adjacent framework of a bran packing machine; Fig. 2 a central sectional view of the same on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a top or plan view, and Fig. 4 a horizontal sectional view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
In said drawings the portions marked A, A and A represent respectively, the stationary and the two folding portions, constituting the body of myimproved sack case, and B, Cand D the three parts of the fastening device by which the swinging portions of the case are secured together when closed.
The casing is cylindrical in general outline, and consists of the main part A, which is usually secured to the frame-work of the ma chine and is stationary in operation, and the two folding portions A and A which are hinged to the part A at a, and are each substantially of the form of a quarter cylinder, as shown in the drawings. The whole rests upon the platform P of the packing machine directly below the discharge tube of the packer, all as will be readily understood.
It is necessary in the operation of packing bran that there should be a casing somewhat smaller than the sack, for the purpose of surrounding said sack and securing it from bursting while the packing operation is gometal) of which the case is composed. It is,
of course, also necessary that whatever is pro- Vided at this point should be held firmly enough to resist the outward pressure While the packing is going on. To obviate the difficulties heretofore experienced, I have cut away two semi-circular placesin the case, one at the back in the center of the part A, and one at the front where the quarter cylindrical parts come together, and have inserted therein pieces S and T formed to fit the corners of the sack, the former of which is riveted all round to the edge of the semi-circular opening in the part A, while the latter is riveted on one side to the part A, and is adapted to close inside the part A when the case is closed, all as shown 'most plainly in Figs. 1 and 2. These pieces are of a shape and size, which, when the sack is filled with the bran or other material, will in the process of packing press upon the outsides of the corners of the sack, and secure the same from bursting, the same as the body of the case secures the sack at other portions. Where these pieces are secured to the case they are made somewhat rounding as shown, so as not to leave any sharp corners to come in contact with the material of the sack.
The parts B O and D compose the fastening device, by which the swinging portions of the case are held together when the sack is closed ready for packing operation. The part B is secured by rivets or otherwise to the portion A of the case, and the part 0 is similarly secured to the portion A of the case. The part D is mounted by means of pivots cl and l, and links L upon the part B, and has an edge which engages with projections c on the part 0, and also is provided with a handle D by which it is operated. The part B has surfaces b with which projections c on the part 0 come in contact when the two portions A and A are swung together, as shown most plainlyin Fig. 4, and it also has two projections c with which the edge of the partD engages.
The operation is, the portion A is first swung into place, and then the portion A the angle of inclination between the surface Z) and the corresponding surface on the projection 0 being such as' to enable them to slide easily together. The part D is then swung around by means of this handle, and its edge engages with the projections c, and the whole is thus securely locked together, the formation being such that no extra fastening is needed for the handle of the part D, as was the case in the above mentioned Letters Patent. The links L permit this part D to swing entirely free from the other portions when desired, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinatiomin asack case for packing machines of the case portions A, A and A the portion A having piece S secured in an opening therein at the lower edge, and the portion A and A having a corresponding opening with a deviceTsecured therein, said pieces S and T being formed to fit the corriers of the sack substantially as shown and described.
I 2. A sack case for packing machines having openings in its opposite sides to receive the corners of the sacks while being filled, and pieces secured in said openings and adapted to bear upon outsides of said corners and hold them from bursting, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a sack case for packing machines, of the case portions hinged together, a fastening part B provided with the surfaces 1) and secured to one of said case portions, a fastening part 0 provided with projections c and c and secured to another of said case portions, and the catch portion D mounted by means of links on the portion B and'adapted to engage with the projections c on the part 0, substantiallyas set forth.
