TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,910, dated February 20, 1894. Application filed January 26,1893- Serial No. 459.85 N ot l citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a mechanism to return the platen, which vduring the return movement will also turn the platen the space between the lines, or what is known as a line space.- The key or lever for effecting these movements is located in close proximity to the key board and forms a part of the type-writer.. 1 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a plan view of a type-writer embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a side elevation.

In the drawings I have shown such parts of a type-writer. with which my improvements have a connection, and consist of abase 1, of rectangular form within the open central space of which are located the keys 2, (only one being shown in dotted lines.) From the rear end of the frame rise brackets 3, having their upper ends connected by rods 4 and 5. A platen 6, is pivoted within a carriage composed of a base 7, and ends 8, and is provided with guides 9, on its under side sliding upon the rods 4 and 5. A spring containing drum 10, is located at the left hand and rear of the carriage, and by means of the band 11, has a connection with the carriage, its action being to move the carriage in one direction.
My improvements consist of a vertical shaft 12, supported in hearings in the base and in the bracket 3. At the upper end of the shaft is secured a grooved wheel 13, and near its lower end is secured a grooved wheel 141. A cord 15 or flexible band connects the wheel 13, with the carriage. A key on lever 16, is located on the upper surface of the base 1, at the right hand of the keyboard, having its end 17, in hook form, its other end having a flexible band or cord 18, connecting with the wheel 14. This key is incased within a shield or tube 19, open at its under side, and having a connection with the base of the machine. A spiral spring 20, surrounds the key within the tube one end being connected to the tube and the other end connected to the key. A
' foot 21, depends from the key and serves to hold the key in a position to beeasily grasped by the finger of the operator. It will be seen that by reason of the connection between the key 16, and the'platen carriage, through the flexible connections and grooved wheels, when the operator pulls upon the key, the carriage will be moved across the machine in opposition to the action of the spring 10, and the spring will move the carriage when the operator releases the key.
To the right hand'end of the carriage upon an extension of the plate'nis' secured a toothed wheel 22, which meshes with the teeth of a wheel 23, pivoted upon a stud 24, projecting from the face of the end of the carriage. An arm 25, is pivoted updngthe-same center as the Wheel 23, and toiits upper end is pivoted a dog 26, which is of the r1equired length to enter the teeth of the wheel 23. The free end of this arm is provided with a transverse recess 27, within which is located a yoke "28, which has a pivotal connection therewith. The free end of this yoke supports a concaved faced roller 29. v
To the right hand end of the machine frame ,and attached to the outer face of the bracket 3, is secured a track 30, extending rearwardly and upwardly at about an angle of forty-five degrees, also extending in the lengthwise direction of the platen, and it is of such conformation that its highest point is near the right hand end of the machine, and from such point it gradually descends toward the left hand end of the machine. This track is so located with reference to the roller 29, that when the arm 25, carrying the roller, moves on its pivot, the roller will move along the track. When the platen is drawn back to start a new line and the dog is in engagement with the teeth of the wheel 23, the roller 29, will ascend the incline of the track thereby causing the arm 25, carrying the dog, to move 'on its pivot, which will cause the wheel 23, to rotate, and by its engagement with the teeth of the wheel 22, will rotate the platen sufficiently for a new line. When the platen haszbeen drawn back the roller will run off the end of the track and during the process of writing the platen will be moved across the machine by the action of the spring. This movement will cause the roller 29, to strike against the end of the track,
