TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,545, dated October 16, 1894. Application ledMareh 5, 1894:. Serial No. 502,371. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known thatI I, ZALMON G. SHOLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers; and `I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My improvement relates particularly to mechanism for operating the bell which indicates the approach of the carriage to the left hand end of its range of travel, and to mechanism for varying such range..
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan of the rear portion of a type writer embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in line a-b of Fig. l looking in the direction indicated by the arrows in said Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation exposing the bell and stop mechanism. Fig. 4 is a detail front elevation of the bell and stop mechan-ism. Fig. 5 is a section through the spring drum and adjacent mechanism. l

A. is the usual top plate of the machine..
B is the platen carriage.- This may be of any well known construction and may be arrails, C, supported upon the top plate, A.
B is an arm reaching rearward from the carriage for the attachment of the strap'fromy the spring drum.
The movement of the carriage toward the right hand side 0f the machineis to be restrained and controlled by any suitable form of escapement mechanism which is operated in the well known manner by the operation of the key levers of the machine.
A hanger, A3, extends downward and'to thev left from the top plate, A', at the left hand rear corner of the machine and has at its lower end a bearing, A4, in which rests a shaft, D. Y
D is a hollow drum loosely surrounding the shaft, D, at the front of the hanger, A3, and inclosing a coiled spring, S, the outer end of which is attached to said drum and the'inner end of which is attached to said shaft.
F is an arm attached immovably to the drum, D. At the rear of said hanger, a plate, E, loosely surrounds said shaft, D. All of the margin of said plate, excepting approximately the lower half is concentric with the shaft, D, and is provided with gear teeth, E. Between the upper edge of said plate and the lower side of the top plate, A', a gear rack, E2, is arranged to mesh into the teeth of said plate, E, and is supported in a xed hanger, E3, at one end and a hanger, E4, to which said rack is rigidly attached and which hanger is in turn held by a binding screw, A?, which extends through and is adapted to slide in a transverse slot, A2, in the top plate, A. By sliding said rack back and forth, said plate, E, may be partially rotated and locked in any desired radial position within the limits prescribed by the portion of the circle not provided with teeth, E. At its lower portion, said plate, E, has an arm, E5, substantially in ythe plane of said plate. A bell, e5, is secured to the rear face of said plate. A hammer, E6, is hinged to the lower end of said arm so as to swing in a plane parallel to said plate and into contact with said bell. A contractting spring, E7, is joined by one end to said arm and by the other end to said hammer in such-manner as to draw said hammer toward said bell. A
Es is an arm extending from the hammer toward the front of the machine and resting normally against the right hand side of the arm, E5, and extending into the path of the arm, F, on the drum, D. At the right of the arm, E5, is another arm, E9, which supports the stop, E10, which is directed toward the yfront of the machine and stands in the path of the arm, F.
D2 is a strap attached to the drum, D', at d2, and extending upward through the opening, a', in the top plate, A,'over the guide rail, D3, to the arm, B. When the carriage is drawn to the right the drum, D', is rotated and the spring, S, strained. When the carriage is allowed to move to the left, the drum is rotated in reverse direction until vthe arm, F, engages the arm, E8, and pushes the hammer, E, away from the bell. As the drum moves further, the arm, E8, slips over the arm, E, andallows the spring, E7, to draw thehammer, E, into contact with said bell. On rotating still further the drum brings the arm,
F, into contact with the unyielding stop, E10. Further rotation is then prevented. The distance between the arm, E8, and the stop,
E10, should be suficient to provide a proper interval of time between the ringing of the bell and theengagement of the drum by the stop, E10.
G is a wheel loosely surrounding the shaft, D, and provided with ratchet teeth, g, and gear teeth, g. A dog, g2, is hinged to the side of the drum, D', and having its free end engaging the teeth of said wheel. A spring, g3, is arranged to hold said dog in contact with said teeth. Under this arrangement, the wheel, G, is rotated with the drum, D', when the latter is rotated by the unwinding of the spring, S. Said wheel, G, may be used for propelling ribbon-moving mechanism in the usual manner.
At the rear end of the shaft, D, a ratchet Wheel, H, is applied rigidly to said shaft, and a dog, H', is hinged to the hanger, A3, in such manner as to allow said Wheel to be moved only in the direction opposed to the spring, S. Ahandle, H2, may be applied to said wheel, H, for turning the latter.
A4 is a scale applied to the top plate, A', adjacent to the slot, A2. A pointer, a3, is applied to the screw, A3, in such manner as to be carried with the latter and the rack, E2, to indicate the position of the arms, E0,and E10, with reference to the total range of travel which may be given to the platen carriage.
To set the stop, E10, to stop the platen carriage at the farthest point at the left ot' the machine, said screw and pointer are moved `to the left hand end of the scale, A4. To lessen the movement of the platen carriage` toward the left, said screw and pointer are moved to the righ-t in proportion to the extent to which it is desired tolimit such movement. It will be observed that the distance between the arm, E0, and the arm, E10, remains thesame when the plate, E, is rotated. Therefore, the bell will always ring at the same interval preceding the stopping ot the carriage by the arm, E10.
I claim as my invention- 1. In atypewriter, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a suitably mounted platen carriage, a spring drum having a part for striking the bell-ham mer hereinafter mentioned, a suitable connection between said spring drum and said carriage, a part adjustable about the axis of said drum, a bellhammer supported by said part eccentric to the axis of said drum, and a bell, substantially as described.
2. In a typewriter, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a suitably mounted platen carriage, a spring drum having a part for striking the bell-hammer and engaging the stop hereinafter mentioned, a suitable connection between said spring drum and said carriage, a part adjustable about the axis of said drum, a bell-hammer and a stop supported by said part eccentric to the axis of said drum, and a bell, substantially as de scribed.
3. In a type writer, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a carriage, a bearing supported by said frame, a shaft extending loosely through said bearing, a drum loosely surrounding said shaft and suitably connected to said carriage and inclosing a spring having one end secured to said shaft and the other end secured to said drum, a plate, E, loosely surrounding said shaft and bearing a bell, e5, mechanism for securing said plate in different positions radial to said shaft, a stop attached to said arm and extending into the path of a portion of said drum, and
a bell hammer-so hinged as to bey adaptedto 1 strike said bell and provided with a part extending into the path of a portion of said drum, substantially as described.
4. In a typewriter, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a carriage, a suit.- ably journaled spring drum, a bell, a plate radially adjustable upon the axis of said drum and having a series of teeth upon its circumference, an adjustable gear engaging said teeth, and a bell-hammer supported by said plate eccentrically to the axis of said drum, substantially as described.
5. In a typewriter, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a carriage, a suitably journaled spring drum, a bell, a plate radially adjustable upon the axis of said drum and 'having a series of teeth engaging said drum, a bell-hammer and a stop supported by said plate eccentrically to the axis of said drum, substantially as described. y
6. In a type-writer, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a bell and bell hammer, a support to which said bell and bell hammer are secured, said support being rotatably secured to said frame eccentric to said bell and hammer, a platencarriage spring drum, a part connected with said platen-carriage spring drum and arranged to traverse a path substantially concentric to the axis of said support and into which said bell hammer extends, substantially as described.
7. In a type writer, the combination withthe frame of the machine, of a bell, bellhammer, and stop, a support to which said bell, bell hammer, and stop are secured, said support being rotatably secured to said frame eccentric to said bell, bell hammer, and stop, a platen-carriage spring drum, a part connected with said platen-carriage spring drum and arranged to traverse a path substantially concentric to the axis of said support and into which said bell hammer and stop extend, substantially as described.
