Be it known that I, KARnMoRsTADT, of Prague, Austria-Hungary,have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv in Apparatus for Looking Medicinal Wafers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an apparatus for putting up medicines in capsular form, and the object is toprovide a practical appliance by which the medicinal-articles may be conveniently prepared in large quantities.

The apparatus is particularly designed for closing what are known as cachets, consisting of concavo-convex waters of soluble material, provided with flanges by which to unite them. By the use of my apparatus, these cachets may be closed with0ut liability of the powder with which they are filled getting between the edges or flanges.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanyi ng drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the apparatus, with the cover-plates open and a number of cachets inserted and ready to be closed. Fig. 2 shows a sectional View, with one of the cover-plates closed. Fig. 3 shows a similar section, with the other cover-plate closed. Fig. 4 shows a sectional view, illustrating a way in which supplemental plates may be employed. Fig. 5 shows-a plan view of two of, these supplemental plates. Fig. 6 shows a top plan view of the apparatus as it appears in closed adjustment. Fig. 7 shows a longitudinal section on line 7--7, of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 shows an end view.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, the letter a designates a bed-plate, which is supported on legs a, so that it may be elevated above the surface on which it rests. Said bed-plate is provided with a number of concavities a in its upper face, and perforations a are preferably formed in the bases of said cavities for the purpose of allowing the escape of air when the cachets are placed in the cavities. J ointears 0. are formed at one side of the bedplate, and a cover-plate b is hinged to said joint-ears, and is provided with a number of openings b, which extend through it and are adapted to register with the concavities a in the bed-plate a, the said cover-plate being' adapted to close down and rest evenly upon the said bed-plate. J oint-ears a are formed at the opposite side of the bed-plate, and a second cover-plate c is hinged to said jointears (1 by means of trunnions c, which engage slots 0 in the joint-ears. The coverplate 0 is also formed with a number of openings 0 which extend through it and are 66 adapted to register with the cavities in the bed-plate, the said cover-plate being adapted to close down and rest evenly upon the bedplate.

In the use of the apparatus, the wafers (1, of

which the cachets are composed, are pressed with the fingers into theconcavities a in the bed-plate a, and into the openings 0 in the cover-plate c, the flanges d of said wafers bearing against the surfaces of the bed-plate 7c and cover-plate respectively. The coverplate I) is then closeddown upon the bed-plate, and bears upon and completely covers the flanges of the wafers or cachets in the concavities of the bed-plate, as illustrated in Large doses may be introduced into the dampened roller is passed over the cover- 8 plate 0 so as to moisten the flanges of the cachets therein. The said cover-plate c is then closed down upon the bed-plate a; a slight pressure will cause the flanges of the cover-plate 0, closed cachets will be found adhering thereto, and may be readily removed by inserting the finger through the opening 0 or by means of a pusher supplied for this cachets toadhere, and then, upon raising the purpose. It will'be seen that, with an apparatus of this kind, anumber of cachets equal to the number of concavities inthe bed-plate a may be simultaneously closed, and that the apparatus may be very quickly and eifectively manipulated.

The concavities in the bed-plate and the openings in the cover-plates may be of varying sizes; and, to provide for closing cachets of still different sizes, I provide a number of supplemental plates, to be applied on the plate a and upon the cover-plate 0. Two of these supplemental platese and e are hinged together at c and the plate e is adapted to be detachably fastened upon the bed-plate a, being provided with openings 6 corresponding with the concavities in said bedplate.

The means here shown for detachably fastening said supplemental plate on the bedplate consists in lugs a, formed on the cars a, and under which the said supplemental plate is adapted to engage, said plate being also formed with offsets of to engage the inner sides of the ear 0. and prevent longitudi nal movement of the supplemental plate.

The supplemental plate 6 is adapted to close down upon the plate 6, and is provided with openings e adapted to register with the openings in the plate e.

A third supplemental platef is detachably fastened to the inner side of the cover-plate c, by means of cars f formed on the supplemental plate and engaging slots in the coverplate, and sliding bolts f in the cover-plate and adapted to engage openings in said ears.

The apparatus, with the supplemental plates attached, is used in the same manner as before described.

When not in use, the supplemental plates 6 and e are carried on the underside of the bed-plate, two of the legs a being provided with notches a which receive the edge of one of the supplemental plates, and the turn-button g being fastened in the bed-plate-and adapted to engage registering openings g in the supplemental plates.

The complete apparatus is capable of compact adjustment, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the supplemental platef being carried 011 the inner side of the cover-plate, and the supplemental plates e and e being carried on the under side of the bed-plate, as just described. The slots 0 in the ears a allow the coverplate 0 to admit the two plates 1) and f between it and the bed-plate.

It is evident the construction here shown may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and there fore the invention is not limited to such construction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An apparatus of the characterdescribed, comprising in its construction a bed-plate having one or more concavities, and a cover-plate hinged to said bed-plate and provided with openings adapted to register with the concavities in the bed-plate.

2. An apparatus of the character described, comprising in its construction three leaves or plates hinged together, and provided with registering openings or concavities.

8. An apparatus of the character described, comprising in its construction abed-plate having one or more concavities, a cover-plate hinged to said bed-plate and provided with openings adapted to register with the concavities in the bed-plate, and supplemental plates hinged together and provided with registering openings, one of the supplemental plates adapted to be detach-ably fastened on the bed-plate, while the other serves as a coverplate.

4. An apparatus of the character described, comprising in its construction a bed-plate havingone or more concavities, and a pair of coverplates hiugedly connected with said bedplate at opposite sides thereof and provided with openings adapted to register with the concavities in the bed-plate.

5. An apparatus of the character described, comprisinginits constructiona bed-plate having one or more'concavities, a pair of coverplates hinged to said bed-plate at opposite sides thereof and provided with openings adapted to register with the concavities in the bed-plate, a pair of supplemental plates hinged together and provided with registering openings, one of said plates adapted to be detachably fastened 0n the bed-plate while the other serves as a cover-plate, and a third supplemental perforated plate adapted to be detachably fastened to one of the cover-plates hinged to the bed-plate.
